If one was to add an amp to a receiver would a 2/3 or 5 channel be the best option.Use would be for HT/TV 75% and music anywhere from 25-30 % including 2 channel listening.Would a 3 channel be just as good or would i be losing something when used for HT/TV.
2/3 or 5 channel amp?

If it was for stereo listening I'd say add a 2-ch amp.
For HT a 5-ch seems ideal, but a 3-ch should be ok too.
Unless your receiver is severely underpowered to drive your speakers, or it has a completely different sound than the amp you want to add.
I would still go for a 5 ch amp, 3-ch amps aren't very common anyway and are in most cases almost as expensive as their 5-ch brothers.- Bottom

Consider this, if you lose one channel in a 5 channel amp, everything goes in for repair.

All:
That would depend on the amp and the problem. I realize the Earthquake CineNova amps are out of his budget (from a previous post) but if one channel goes bad, you simply and only send back the bad channel (assuming the channel is bad and there isn't any other problem) --- a real upside to this amp especially if you are using the 5-channel version but are more of a 2-channel guy. You send back the bad channel yet continue to use the amp....NICE!

Personally if we were doing exactly what I'd want it would me 3 mono's for the front three channels and a 2-channel amp for the rears. (You could also add another 2-channel later for 7.1) :B
But otherwise yes, IMO 2/3 of the same quality (ie: more expensive in total) would be better than one 5 channel.

by Chris DErik just posted a link to the Kenwood's KM-Z1 six-channel power amp for sale CHEAP... $495. Would this be a good unit to drive a Rotel signal? Or would the Kenwood be cheap and distort the fine, pure sound that we all aspire to?
