Probably too late on this... I read the beginning and quickly scanned the latter part of the thread where the home price discussions started, didn't notice if drivers and other materials have already been purchased.
My suggestion would be to not make the column full round in cross section, but rather put a flat baffle on the hidden side and use a line array of smaller subwoofers.
The floor to ceiling array should significantly attenuate room modes associated with floor/ceiling reflections. You might get some reductions in nonlinear distortion. And dividing the internal volume into smaller dimensions would shift internal standing wave fundamentals above the passband of the subwoofer.- Bottom

This is an interesting thread. Chas, forgive me if this was mentioned already, but how do you plan to make the flutes in the post? I have my whole basement modeled in Greko/Roman and looked at building the posts myself. I ended up buying them when I couldn't come up with a half decent method of making the flutes in the poles.
Best,
Mark- Bottom

Mike:
The lady I am building the "Greek" sonotube sub for wants real Greek, true to history accurate. After my crash course in ancient columns, it turns out the Doric greek columns did not use flutes. So, I have not put any flutes in my column. As a matter of fact, the whole thing looks pretty plain jane to me but it matches the other two columns she has in her living room. I bought the capitol from a place called foamfactory, which it turns out is only 5 minutes from my home. I asked them about covering tubes and they said it could be done for a price. Most of the columns they sell are not as large in diameter as the one I am building. It is 16 inches. I am probably going to install it this weekend and will get some pictures of it primed and ready to go. So check back.

You're right Chuck, the original Greek columns were plain...
More power to you for keeping them that way. Given something with that large a diameter, a plain face is just fine. Mine are only 10" and yet, still are imposing...
Best regards,
Mark
PS: For sure - post some pictures!
PPS: Are the other columns tapered? Not sure how this will affect the "effect" of your column.- Bottom
