    Speaker Builder Magazine

I just discovered this little magazine. Sadly, it appears that I was about 10 years to late. Back issues are availible for $32/year. Do you guys think that this would be money well spent for edumucating myself about this little hobby?

Speaker Builder was a good (not great) resource (one of just a couple) prior to the boom in internet resources. Even then it was a crap shoot if whether nor not there was going to be much of value in an issue.

As fast as the technology is evolving I see little value in buying back issues.

Speaker Builder back issues from 1981-84 are some of the best. David Weems book on designing and building your own loudspeakers is helpful. It is not how loud the speakers play it is how real they sound. Transmision lines with series crossovers I think sound the most real. How many people have ever heard the Sen Lab tweeters and Dalesford woofers used in Fried's super monitor speakers? Look up transmission lines and series crossovers and purchase a table saw, router drill and soldering iron .

Sounds interesting, could you elaborate a little more.

ThomasW: Sometimes the internet explosion of info is a curse. At times you can search for something specific and use all kinds of combinations of quote marks, plus and minus signs and still get a couple of million hits and still have to sort through the BS. Or worse, end up with some listings for PatentStorm and a few bogus sites listing every word in the English language.

Geesh, I remember when my phone number was Sherwood 4706 and 5 other houses shared the line. Were those the good old days?

It's no more a curse than the days when magazines and books were the only source info.

The drivers he's referring to are literally antiques

Sen-Lab changed it's name to 'Dynaudio' in the 1970s.

Fried speakers (pronounced 'freed' not 'fried') are 'IMF' Irving M Fried. http://www.imf-electronics.com/

TL's were very popular starting in the late 1960's

Unless you heard the antiques with Hiquphon tweeters in C3L and O4-6 T-line cabinets your opinion might change. Many of the Morel tweeters are off shoots of Dynaudio design. I know of The custom made drivers Fried used in C1 and O1 system rival many hyped up drivers used today. Many of the froam ruber surrounds on Fried Carboneau C3L and O3 drivers have dry rotted. Kef,Audax and Dalesford used pvc rubber surrounds. Armour all has kept these drivers in good condition. I can turn volume up on NAD 162 pre amp over halfway on cd's and on vinyl 3/4 hooked up to Parasound HCA-3500. I have done a to b comparisons to my C6 speakers and there is not that much of a difference. These old drivers have higher efficency then stock versions. The difference in newer recordings like Moody Blues Hall of Fame or Strange Times compared to Mobile Fidelity Gold masters of Days of Future Passed is quite evident. The newer recordings can play louder and cleaner.

Breaking with modern conventions - a highly musical 2-way system using an 8" woofer
                by theSven
                By Jon Hancock

This article will describe the fruits of my efforts to build a moderate sized speaker which might be moderately above average in performance for a basic two-way system. I desired a speaker like this both for my own use in secondary systems, and to fill a need for some friends, who desired fairly full range response (i.e., “it’s gotta have good bass”). Also, though I have access to a good wood shop, many potential DIY enthusiasts may not, so I hoped to use a modified...

                Concession counter for your HT
                by George Bellefontaine
In the latest issue of Home Theater Builder magazine there is a terrific article on how to build your own candy counter, starting from a base kitchen cabinet. Inexpensive, too. My room layout just doesn't allow for a concession stand, but for those who do have space, this would be a great article to...
