Downstream volume control is the Mercedes of SQ using the DCX but I think you can get 90% of the way there just doing like the pro guys have always done and optimizing your gain structure. That means you set the gains of all the components (preamp, EQ, amp, speakers) so they all clip at about the same time as you increase the signal level. For the DCX that means you need adjustable gain on the amps to set the levels. It could be the built-in gain knobs on a pro amp or a pot or fixed resistors between the DCX and the amp.

I'd have to go with the Emotiva, as my balanced input Aragon's don't have level controls. Well, just for testing, might be an acceptable compromise. But what does IT sound like?

I own the Emotiva, and am currently using it as a preamp (via bypass) while I finish some things up on the other system. It surprisingly is quite transparent and far better sounding than what I expected. HT gear has come a long ways since just 4 or 5 years ago when I started this hobby. Back then I owned a BK processor that sounded like @$$ compared to this.

It isn't a Burmeister (or whatever uber brand you choose) but it doesn't seem to get in the way either. For using as an 8 channel volume control, I think it should work well and it also offers HT features if that is what you need. Does anyone know what analog volume controller chip they are using?

                      AJ,

The HK receiver. Doesn't that only have 5.1 analog inputs on the rear of it? From my understanding, you can only use a receiver like that for 5 channels of amplification. The .1 input is merely for outputting to the sub out (you gain volume control over it, that's all).

                          Beautiful!

Right now I'm using two Panasonic SA-XR25 digital receivers as my volume control/amplification for my DCX2496. The only problem is that once in a while they won't stay in sync when I use my remote control, but it's rare and quickly fixed by getting off my behind and adjusting it. They have almost no noise floor and sound absolutely fantastic.

AJ, what are you using with your DCX2496?
