Dual Woofer configuration (?) 2 ported boxes vs. 1 ported box

The design specs for a separate ported enclosure in 18L for each 7" wooofer. Is there a benefit to have each woofer in its own enclosure for a 2.5 way? What is the theory behind this versus one 36L ported to same frequency for 2 woofers?

It is easier to build a strong 18 liter cabinet and also the two woofer cannot interact with each other.

As one example of the above, having the two woofers in separate chambers is useful in the event that one of the woofers gives up the ghost.
