My new bottom feeding laptop ...... ;)

Given all the bucks I spend on A/V gear I have to economize somewhere. So I set a ~$1K limit for my laptops. It's pretty amazing what that amount buys in todays market.

Over the w/e Best Buy had the following deal. Compaq R3240 for $1330 with $280 in rebates. Final cost was $1050.

    What did that buy?

    2.0 GHz AMD Athlon 64 3200+ processor, 60 GB hard drive, 512 MB RAM, DVD+RW/CD-RW, 15.4-inch WXGA LCD, built-in NVIDIA GeForce4 440, integrated 10/100 Base-T ethernet, 54g 802.11b/g wireless LAN, a 5-in-1 Memory Reader, FireWire, USB, etc, etc ,etc...........

    I can't build a desktop for that .........

It was his 'find', but his local store in Livermore was sold out. I walked out of the store in Denver with my new laptop, all Jon got was a piece of paper ...... :roflmao:

Yeah, go ahead and rub it it...

But my piece of paper runs practically forever without re-charging....

just doesn't do much, though.

But someday I'll be able to trade my piece of paper for one of these!

No more than if they were being made by HP .....

Never owned anything made by Compaq or bought a 'puter' from Best Buy. Am stress testing it for two weeks, that's the limit of BB's return/exchange policy.

So far, so good ...... :T

Its likely not as big an issue with laptops since every brand is propritory anyway but their tower PC's are horrible to work with as far as upgrading etc. HP's involvement should help somewhat in that regard but not by much

                  Got Laptop? :yeah:

Actually, I work for a semiconductor company that sells a lot of different parts to companies like Dell, HP, Compaq. We do draw a disctinction between HPQ, and HP. And prefer the former. YMMV.

But that will change- they're going to an ODM design model, as HP has been for some time, so the design quality will be determined not by HPQ, but by Foxconn, Asustek, HiPro, etc. Even for "Enterprise" PC's. Yuck. There are more engineers being let go this month as a result of these trends.

BTW, I've been following AMD design ins at HPQ for a while....

                    Sweet!!

I definitely like this machine so far (well, not very far, but controls are great, keyboard feels good, screen looks good, it's quiet, power management seems to work well, and it feels pretty robust.

Not bad at all for a bit over a grand!

Well I can't say to much about HPQ given my toubles with Dell.

Well, I've worked with both from the vendor side. I find Dell more difficult to work with and much more willing to jerk people around over pennies. I have no love for Fiorina, but then I don't care much for Dell management, either.

Biggest plus in my book for HPQ is that they put together and sell some pretty decent AMD based systems, (one of their Proliant 4 ways was used for the dual core demo by AMD last week- 8 processors running in a 4 socket system), including this laptop- which runs remarkable cool for PR3200 processor equivalent to an Intel P4 3.2 GHz. In fact, I looked at a friend's 2.6 GHz Sony P4 laptop, and that was MUCH noiser, and ran much hotter (a common complaint on laptop forums) than my eMachines- which is noiser and hotter than this thing. I guess the "Power Now" stuff on the AMD processors works pretty well- even under normal AC outlet mode, it drops back to 1.6 GHz instead of the 2 GHz it runs at "full song". 8) Yet it's very responsive and snappy feeling.

The real test will be doing some large circuit simulations. That should get the juices flowing. :B :E
