    Picked Up a VFD Display

I picked up a 20x2 Vacuumn Florescent Display for my Lian-Li.

This one is the do it yourself Noritake that uses the parallel port.

Following are a few pictures of the process.

    Bare display

    Parts assembled

    Soldering cord to VFD

    Done and tied off

    Assembly of the DB25

    Completed System

    WinAmp Data

    Nuff said

Now if I can sortout how to get MBM5 to port the rest of the system info I would be happy...

Once I'm done testing, I''ll most likely place it into the Lian-Li in the upper bay. Unless I come up with something else. I do have this 5" full color VGA LCD monitor I was thinking of using as well...

Very cool Bing! What software are you using to send the text to the display?

Where are you going to mount it? I assume in an unused drive bay?

Thanks Andrew, small stuff, however coming from you that means a lot

Sili, I'm using LCDcenter to drive it. it's a cool app that has lot of support for general purpose coms, Winamp, motherboard monitor...etc..

        More here

I think it will go into the top 5.25 bay. I was also pondering mounting it in a small box, tacked somewhere on the lower portion of my Monitor.

Trev I ordered mine from DigiKey

Do a search on Noritake. The Item is # 286-1004-ND. It is the bare VFD and not a kit. I assembled everything myself.

                The display is $114 cdn

You'll need a Male DB25 connector, 12 conductor wire or ribbon cord, Female Molex connector, power wires and a filter for the glass (it's non polorized) I scrounged most of this stuff from my parts bins :P

Insure you have an open Parallel port (printer port) for this VFD communications link.

Let me know if you need a hand

Hey Jon, good to see you join up on the HTG!

We actually have quite a few Winnipeggers here on the forum, Welcome!

Jon and I use to work together. He was part of our IT group and is one of the main reasons I'm a hardware nut. We spent many hours and days disscussing how to overclock everything from CPU's to GPU's. Jon however is more hardcore

Well I my be a little crazier with the CPU voltage, but you got all the coolest gizmos 8)

BTW any one want to buy an Athlon 700 (o/c's to 800) with a very large fan on a brand new Abit KA7 Motherboard? $160 CDN, no tax. With some good quality RAM I am sure this thing could get to 900. Maybe I'll test that when the RMA'd board gets in. All the capacitors on the original KA7 blew up, too much overclocking I think...
                        here's the pic

Yup, you know you have hit an OC ceiling once the caps start to blow 8O  8) ... Heheh, Like I said HARDCORE!

Jon is the type of IT guy that would OC corporate servers if he could get away with it. LOL!
