    Power Supply

I am about to pounce on a new case, however I can buy this case with a 300 watt power supply included or a 420 watt power supply.

What would be sufficient. In what I have seen so far, the 300 watt size seems to be most common. So why would there be a 420 watt supply available? What would you need it for?,, or is more better.

    Thanks.

    Well, Trevor,

If you have a power hungry CPU, lots of RAM, and a high performance GForce video card, that ups the ante for base system power. Note that Pentium IV systems even have a special 12V connector for extra power for the CPU.

Then, there's peripherals. One or two hard disks. A CD-R or CD-RW; a DVD-ROM drive. A sound card. An NIC card, if its not on the motherboard. USB power. Etc.

Then, many modern power supplies use variable speed fans; depending on power usage and heat buildup, the fan speed varies. If you want a quiet system, a 400W supply running at 65% of capacity may be a better bet than a 300 watt supply running at 88% capacity. But don't make assumptions; check out the MFR's specs.

As a former mil/aerospace power supply designer, I feel more comfortable if the supply isn't working too hard. Plus, I've seen too many PC problems arise because of marginal power supply behavior- I think I recall KennyG having some problems in that regard last year.

    Best regards,

    Jon

More power is always the best route. You have to ask?
