You can give a try to VirtualDub. http://www.virtualdub.org/
It can edit the video file and change to whatever codec commonly used(can do video/audio seperately too).
I had no problems using it so far. The only low side I heard from friends was it cannot convert rvmb files directly which requires rvmb turns into avi before processing. I did not try that so I am not certain about this point.

Thought you were doing the video files ops:

If you just want to convert DVD to mp4, check this guide out:
A guide on how to use StaxRip to encode video, with an emphasis on the H.264 format using a DVD to H.264 conversion as an example

StaxRip has it's own programmed link(it'll help you download, install and etc.) to the anything you would need for doing the job. I think it's pretty good for entry user without using 20programs for converting a single file. Give it a try.

Or go to this website for various guides

Did you load from a dvd drive or dvd files ripped into hard drive? DVDs have encoded that you will have to ripped into hard drive by programs like DVDFab Decrypter before doing conversion.
And the program requires .NET 2.0 too incase you did not install it before

Did you include all the vob file when you choose the source? Or just the ifo file?
It will not run if you just selected the ifo file for conversion

And the program itself has the guide for converting DVD as well
Try to read it and see what was missing.

VLC is a great (free) way to go as well. Transcoding is available by choosing advnaced under the playback screen.

I have only use the mac version.
