I have thought and thought about building a HTPC, but dont really have a use for it right now. But I might someday. Until then, this is my current rig:
MSI K8N Neo4
Athlon 64 3200 90nm
1GB Crucial Ballistix PC4200
Asus X300 (the only thing that I really need to upgrade)
Seagate 120GB SATA system drive
Seagate 400GB music storage drive (nearly full...will upgrade to the 750 when it is out)
Silverstone TJ04 case modified by me to be super quiet
Plextor PX716SA SATA DVD drive
Thermalright XP90 CPU cooler
Nexus 92mm CPU fan
2 x Nexus 120mm case fans
Antec Phantom 350 fanless power supply
Acer F-20 Ferrari 20.1" LCD monitor
B&W M1 speakers
Martin Logan Dynamo sub
Sherwood crappy-ass receiver (for now)
I used some damping material on the sides and top of the case. I used aluminum tape to seal all the extra holes in the front panel so the air intake was the only way to get air in. I also used a filter that helps alot. The fans are sealed with custom silicone gaskets and held on with zip ties. I had fan controllers, but it got too hot, so the fans all run at 12V and it is still as silent as can be. I dremeled the fan grilles out and used some wire grilles. There are foam blocks in the unused drive bays. The hard drives are supported by foam blocks and secured by aluminum tape that also acts and some kind of heatsink. And a Zalman northbridge heatsink replaced the noisy fan. The GPU card is passive as well so the only 3 fans are the quiet Nexus ones. YAY....no ribbon cables!
