    Looking for 3D software

I was wanting to see if anyone could guide me in the right direction here, I am looking for a software package that you can take a flat drawing and create a 2d or 3d object out of it, I found a software package for sign making called ArtCam Pro, but it is around $7k for the whole package. :E. Maybe something out there a little less expensive?

No, something like Photoshop, I have a new machine that is basicly like a CNC router, but alot smaller. It comes with a software package that lets you design projects using a library of images that they provide. You can import .jpg's and such that have been converted to grayscale and the software uses that to determine the depth of cut, but the quality is not that great. I want to create my own designs to use. I put an example below of a poster case top that I am designing to give you an idea.(ignore the arrows)

Here is an idea of what I am looking for, this is ArtCam Pro, it is an awsome software package but the price is around $7k and you have to pay a yearly update fee which is very high. I didnt know if there was any software out there that was similar.

Wow that's pretty cool! I'm afraid I don't know of anything for taking bitmaps and converting them to 3D cad (or cad-like) files, i would imagine that requires a LOT of interpolation and programming to do well....hence the $7G. The software you have.... does it get better results with higher sized/quality bitmaps? If you're able to get good results out of higher quality images then I say you're lucky for getting it for free

The software package does okay with high quality images, the problem I have is that I have designed alot of elements on paper, so they are just pencil drawings.......maybe I could scan them and shade them in photoshop? Hmmmmm. thus creating the depth by virtue of grayscale?

I wish the software that I have was free  , it and the machine cost me over $2500. This machine is really just made to make simple signs, but I see alot more potential than that with it so I am trying to push the limits to see what I can make.

You could try playing with the image files in photoshop etc as well... add contrast, smoothing etc and play with the results...perhaps an exagerated version of the image will give cleaner results.....?

Sounds like you should be able to do the trick in Photoshop. If you send me a scanned image, I might play around with it between coats of paint on my sub

Hey Danish, Sorry I didnt get back with you on this, I missed your post. Thanks for your offer.
I ended up buying Corel Draw X3 and it has some features that allow me to play with contouring and such, it seems to work better in this application than Photoshop CS2. Here is an example of what I was trying to accomplish.

So it sounds more like you have a 2-1/2D machine, not 3D, or does the motion controller have Z-axis control?

If the first case, then you're better off using your Trace module to create vector cutting paths for the CNC to follow. CorelDraw can do this. Conversion to G-code or other format that the motion controller can understand is another story. That will depend on the machine. More details here may help.

If the second case, then you probably need to spend another $1000 or so to get CAM software. Casmate and Signlab are popular here, but the hobby CNC industry may have some really cheap solutions, like BobCAD, etc.

                      Good luck,

                      ensen.
