    Windows Error

The teenager was on the PC last night....

The system froze on her last night, I got checkdisk this morning and on an adaware scan her account had a mess of stuff on it

Now I'm getting random reboots and the following error:

    BCCode : 24 BCP1 : 001902FE BCP2 : F7A3F948 BCP3 : F7A3F644
    BCP4 : 80529184 OSVer : 5_1_2600 SP : 2_0 Product : 256_1
I tried googling it but nothing came up....?

    Any help would be appreciated

Go into Control Panel, System, click the Advanced tab, click Settings under Startup and Recovery, and uncheck "Automatically restart". Chances are you're getting a blue screen of death and XP is rebooting automatically, so you can't see the error.

Where are you seeing the BCCode stuff? In a BSOD screen, or a window that pops up before rebooting?

Also, look and see if there's any errors in the event log. Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Event Viewer, go to System, and note any errors occurring at the time of the reboots and post them here.

Damnit! I was trying to download FireFox and it crashed again!

This time the screen went black/no signal but the system was still running (though the HD activity light was nill) I had to do a hard boot to get back ....

No error in the event viewer this time though.... :scratchhead:

So I installed FireFox...seems to be a lot quicker too :T How does this affect my Adaware and Spybot installations though? Especially Spybot's blocked pages?

I did some digging and those errors are usually caused by a RAM problem.

Did you change any hardware (e.g. upgrade RAM) recently?

Download memtest86 and run it. It creates a boot floppy. Boot from the floppy and let it run for a while. If there are errors, it'll tell you.

My guess would be to reformat the hard drive if it keeps happening.

Same Ram I've had in it since putting it together in November.... I've already got Memtest...I'll run it and SpinRite later....

If Memtest shows errors, reseat the DIMMs and run it again.

                    Looks like bad RAM

Ran Memtest and even after re-seating got 6 errors in test 4, 34 in test 6 and 68 in test 7

Did you change any BIOS settings recently? Attempt overclocking? Change RAM timings? Those sorts of things can cause problems too. Try resetting your BIOS to defaults and see if the errors go away.

Also check your fans to make sure they are working properly and nothing's getting too toasty inside your case.

It's not bad RAM, you're HD has some bad sectors on it and it's causing files to get corrupted... hence the bottom two errors...

Find out what manufacturer makes your disk and as long as it's not Toshiba...they have disk utilities that will scan the disk and try to repair it if possible.

The only other thing you can probably do is do a write zeros to the disk which should restore the disk to it's factory built condition.

If you run the checkdisk command and have it automatically fix and repair that might help as well (try this first)...but those damaged sectors in the files system will remain there.

Memtest reported errors, so it's the RAM. Since HD files are cached in RAM by Windows, bad RAM can lead to errors and filesystem corruption on the HD as well.

It might be a bad RAM, a bad drive or you need to upgrade your chipset and your controllers, check and see if your board has an update.
