Big hubub on this one George. Should offer front projector users all of the advantages of CRT and none of the disadvantages. Also suppose to offer a greater color palet than anything available today.

Sounds promising. How much will it cost for a unit aimed at the home theater market?

Pricing info is completely undetermined at this point. There is an already a very long thread about this over at AVS, with confirmation from Alan Gouger of AVS himself, that something is, in fact, coming in September, and that large companies are involved. The thread initiator claims it is not Sony, and not GLV, and that demos are occurring, and that it will be priced less the top-of-the-line RPTV. Whatever that means.
The likely looking candiate is some sort of solid state photonic device modulated lasers combined with a DILA type light valve. We'll see.
No buying any new PJs 'til we hear.

Well this really does sound interesting. All HT/FPers will be all ears and eyes come this Fall.

Yeah, this one could certainly throw a monkey wrench in a lot of other folks product and business plans.... will be an interesting year.
Now, if we can get the color gamut range and contrast of a top CRT projector, and the geometry, convergence, and ease of setup of a digital projector, good lifetime on the lasers (remember, I've worn out TWO lasers in one of my Sony CD players), then this could be very, very interesting.
Regards,
Jon

Well it is pretty well confirmed that the buzz is in reference to a Kodak product, very likely in conjunction with JVC/DILA. Kodak has in fact announced a DILA based greater-than-hidef resolution (QXGA?) D cinema unit combined with a total media and color management system for movie projection at multiplexes.
This link has no reference to lasers, nor any other lighting source, and I have no information that it has them for sure. But the rumored home use projector that is laser based is by Kodak, according to pretty good sources at AVS, so it is natural to assume they partnered with JVC on that as well.
My department has put out feelers for a demo for either unit, since we would be interested in both. Keep you posted what I find out inasmuch as I am allowed.

Oh yeah, baby. This could be a good one. I'll put the D theater projector purchase on hold until we hear more about this one. It'll probably be out of my price range, though.

Yep, this technology sounds VERY exciting. Especially if it's out (or at least announced) in September, and looks to be affordable.
Brandon,
That Kodak projector is just a rebadging of JVC's $200,000 QXGA LCOS/D-ILA FPTV. It is a neat unit, but way too pricey for all but the most rich HT enthusiasts.
SXRD also sounds exciting, but a bit expensive for general HT, and if some amazingly good looking, long life, no heat, low cost laser projector comes out, it's going to drive all of the FPTVs and RPTVs prices down.

Yes, I had ben told Kodak was NOT the one shopping the HT targetted laser unit after all. Nice to know the Kodak is a rebadged QX1 though.
Now I'm being told that Epson is the one with the mystery demo product. Still trying to run it down and get a demo.
Found out we get half off QX1's at work the other day. What a bargain.

Sony Japan has announced they'll be releasing a dvd player/recorder using the blue laser technology. Don't know when it will be in North America but it's gonna be expensive. Over $3000.
Well, it's a start.

by Hdale85Ok so browsing the net the other day I learned of this projector. It's completely laser powered, true 4k, does 3D in true 4k and uses passive glasses. Projects 4k 3D images to both eyes together so you don't experience the 3D sickness/eyestrain/brain strain. It's going to be just under 10k, which seems... - Loading...
