The sheer great price on this PJ has caught my interest. I'm just still not sure about going with something as low as 800x600 resolution. Seeing PJ's in action on 8' or larger screens, resolution becomes SO important at that size. I really want something that can truly do 1080i as a minimum, 720p preferred, 1080p in a perfect world. (who wouldn't?)
The problem is, I want the filet mignon resolution at hamburger price. (sigh) 'tis the story of my life.
Who knows... I may just end up with something like this for now, to tide me over until technology improves and every PJ is at 1080p for a few thousand dollars in a few years.

It's amazing that the X1 and Dell 2100 are dipping under $1000!
But personally, I wouldn't buy a portable projector with resolution lower than XGA.
HDTV is here, and HD-DVD is ponly a few years away, and even though SVGA is fine for DVD, DSS, and VHS, XGA does look better, and often doesn't cost much more to buy.

Andrew, I bought my NEC from a dealer in Burlington Ontario who also carries the X1. I do believe he has it priced around $1200 cdn. You can reach him by e-mail at:

If you are only going to view dvds, the 800 x 600 is okay, I guess, but don't think it would be great for HDTV.

Well, I'll get up on my usual tired old nag, and say again, if you haven't seen DVD scaled to 12870X720P or 1440X864, you don't know how good it can be...
Since there are DVD players coming out that do this pretty well over a DVI connection, for those not interested in the HTPC route, there's a new game in town.
Speaking of HTPC's, there's a new update to NVDVD, 2.55 and it's nice- free if you already have NVDVD. And though it probably runs best on NV17 hardware (like the GF4 440 MX card) it also runs on Radeon's... the new release just seems to have a little more visual depth and punch, and a variety of other enhancements.
Regards,
Jon

Energeezer - do tell more about that CRT. Better yet, start a new thread...
CRT is awesome but it's not for everyone--ceiling height (or floor space), light control, setup, supporting hardware (e.g. scaler or doubler), calibration and maintenance time, are all factors. An X1 can be up and running in an hour or less (heck, 10 minutes if you just set it on a coffee table).

You are all absolutely right. X1 is easy to set up and it is small
My PJ is an Electrohome Marquee 8500 which I will part with for $2500 and do all the setup including some pretty damm good tweaking as I have set up about 10 of these now. I have others as well but more cash.
I'll supply you with references of several other happy CRT owners in the city. I gurantee it will blow the doors off the x1 and indeed almost all the digitals. (some would say all but I am a bit more open minded than your standard CRT nut)
Andrew
I have seen your theater and yes it would be a challenge in your room but IMO well worth the effort. I know you are not afraid of a little time and effort (judging by your DIY stuff and you theater in general)
When I came over and you upgraded my 1055 firmware (thanks again) I invited you over to see these things in action and was expecting you to let me know when your HT group was meeting but I have not heard from you. Lets hook up and I'll hook you on CRT. I'd bet on it.

Andrew,
Did you get the X1 yet? There are several Canadian online dealers that are selling the X1 for just under $1400 plus GST with either FREE or small shipping fee....no PST for orders out of province.
I had paid $1399 plus $12.95 shipping and 7% GST from an Infocus authorized online dealer in Quebec (for quick delivery, they have warehouses across Canada). It shipped last Friday and arrived yesterday (Monday) via Purolator Ground from Vancouver.

David no I haven't gotten mine yet. It could be some time before I have the funds for it as well so for now I'll live vicariously though you
Energeezer I really would like to see your set up one of these days. As for the group get together we haven't had one in awhile and with summer coming it may be some time before we have one given everyone's busy schedule. I'll keep you posted though.

Ordered my X1 today. For what they sell for + the 5yr warranty if purchased by July 31 and trade up priviledges down the road, how can a guy go wrong? I watch DVD's 95% of the time anyway and don't plan on getting a HDTV sat or cable box for a couple of years at least. By then who knows what will be available for trading into. I'll repost a review and new pics once it's up and running. Should be an 85"x48" (97" diag.) screen in my 12'Wx25'Lx7.6'H room.

I posted a pic in the gallery of how it's coming along.I decided to go with 1/2 MDF with 2 coats of primer and 4 coats of Behr Ultra White flat.Just going to wait a couple of days for it to dry them I'll sand it smooth with 320 grit.My X1 should be in this week.I can't wait!!!I fabricated a ceiling mount from a speaker mount.I figure after I mount the X1 I'll project the image on the wall then just mount the screen in a position that I won't have to use the keystone correction.- Bottom

by ThomasJHi, I just bought a Pioneer 56TXi and I like it but I am just wondering if anyone has compared it to the 1056? I have a month to exchange the Pioneer for the 1056 and I am thinking of seeing if I can bring the 1056 home to compare. Anyone buy one recently here in Canada? What kind of price should I...-

Hi!
It's great to see a lot of us making the move to FPTV.
I noticed that many of the new lower priced DLP FPTV's that
are being purchased are SVGA 800x600 Resolutions.
Not many are investing in the XGA 1024x768 Resolution DLP FPTV's

I am investigating the many models of Projectors out there. My question would be when watching DVDs through a DVD player is there any noticable difference between XGA and SVGA resolution? thanks and have a great day. - Loading...
