Well, this is an unusual little baby! h:

It uses "1/4 HD definition" LCD panels (900X544) so as to reduce scaling errors for HD sources, specifically 1920X100i. Regretabbly, this probably will soften DVD playback, if it doesn't do 1:1 pixel mapping for widescreen DVD to 858X480P, but scales up to the panel resolution. The claimed contrast ratio sounds quite good, and the list and selling price put it squarely in the high bang for the buck category ($2495, 1498) along with the wide VGA projectors. It's only a half megapixel display, so it does give away a bit to the likes of the HS-10.

Still, it's almost inexpensive enough to consider for a bedroom projector!

    Thanks E!

    -Jon

I agree, Jon, I do believe there would be a soft picture for dvd viewing. But as you say, it's certainly cheap and good enough for the bedroom or another secondary location. We're still waiting for more user reviews of the HS 10, but right now it still looks like the better value.

You guys got me thinking but wouldn't with 964x544 it would be great for DVD but not for anything higher like HD?

SE basically sells the same unit:

        > Resolution: 964 x 544 Wide VGA
        > Brightness: 700 ANSI Lumens
        > Aspect Ratio: 16:9; 4:3 compatible
        > Weight: 7.5 lbs / 3 kg
        > Inputs: 1-RGB computer, 1- RCA component video, 1-RCA composite video, 1-S-Video

        Curious for your "expert" opinions!

Well, actually they seem to be designed for down conversion of HD more than for DVD. If they have a good scaler, or a pass through mode with 1:1 pixel mapping for DVD, then they'll be fairly sharp for DVD. If it always scales for DVD, that's going to create some aliasing problems. The spec sheet doesn't really make how it handles scaling at all clear... probably written by someone in marketing.

I wouldn't buy this without seeing some kind of a demonstration connected to a dvd player, Eric.

Thanks guys...no worries George...earliest I'd go FP would be around April/May of next year! By then I should have learned enough to be "some what" knowledgeable on this stuff...but please don't hold me to that!

I'm just so surprised on the prices that these are coming down too! 8O Good for us of course!!!

Exactly, Eric, prices seem to be dropping rapidly. That's why I am in no rush to upgrade from my 4 year old Sony lcd PJ.
