    Sony vph D50Q projector

I have a Sony VPH-D50Q (with EXB-DS10 Extender) and am feeding it using the RGB inputs via BNC Cables (InputA??). It receives std. video (480i) just fine but when I send it 480p, 720i or 1080, it says "Input A - No Signal. Also, when I go to the Set Settings menu in Service Setting mode, it indicates an OSC Pattern P2 and won't allow me to change it.
Settings include: In Set Settings Menu: Input A: Component, (not RGB, HDTV-YBbPr, or HDTV-GBR).
5 BNC Mode is Off (not On). In Options: Int IDTV is On (not Off).
Am I using incorrect setup settings and if so, what should they be?

Tom are you sure that the PJ can receive high def over RGB? Not every PJ can.

And your reference to Input A being component, but sending video over RGB, don't seem to match up. Shouldn't it be a different input than input A then, for RGB?

Good questions Chris. The 50Q is HDTV capable but the input settings Component vs RGB, GBR, YBbPr are very much in question. However, if I set it to anything other than Component, I either get green only or a totally scrambled screen. That's why I am trying to find someone who has setup experience on the 50Q.

If that's the Sony CRT I remember, then it should indeed be able to handle HD over RGB. But as Chris stated, if INPUT A says component, then it won't carry a RGB signal. Seems to me you would have to select BNC mode and that should do the trick. You say BNC mode is off in the Set Settings Menu. Can you turn it on and then see if you are getting a signal ? Also, are you using the proper RGB cable, which has 4 connects: a RGB and SYNC ?

          ... (wouldn't a proper RGB cable have 5?)

Yes, and I should have known that. There's Red, Green, Blue, Yellow and White, and one of them is sync. Forgot which.

Chris & George. Thanks for the suggestions.

I got it fixed by changing Input A to HDTV-YPbPr in set settings and SYNC to Ext (HV) in Input Settings. But, I had to pull the inputs to the projector while doing it because it "garbles" the screen otherwise and you can't see the Menu items. It works fine now. Only 3 cables are required. It syncs on the green signal.

Interesting, I didn't realize any PJ could sync on the green signal. Anyway, we're certianly glad you got things working. That is one great projector. The 50 and 90 series were tops in their field.

On component HD, the green signal carries sync. In fact, it has a rather special sync which is a PITA to get setup from a conventional RGBHV setup, one of the main pains in making an RGB to component converter.

Hi, Jon. Thanks for enlightening me. It's been a long time since I played with crts.

Yeah, well I may be the poster child for Luddites on the board, as I still own two CRT projectors- an NEC 9PG and an NEC 10PG (love those 9" tubes in the 10PG!). The 9 is OK for 720P HD, but the 10 shines on 1080P. Got DVI/HDCP to RGBHV converters for them, too, as well as a couple of NEC pro video switchers. Hah! My home will be museum status soon at this rate! (well, I do have a Panny 50" plasma in the bedroom... so I'm not totally bonkers).

I donated my old Zenith several years ago to a local charity who still uses it. Pretty damn hard to beat crt, not only for its great picture but for its durability. I can see why you have stuck with them, Jon.

Yeah, I used to drool over the NEC 10PG. 8)

But it's definitely a memory exercise to think about CRT configuration and calibration again.

I used to have Sony 1292Q CRT Projector, which had an amazingly crisp picture with 1080i input! :B But it's 13 fans sounded like a jet starting to taxi down the runway. 8O
