    New TV?

Well I have been having problems with my tv, a Magnovox 32" LCD TV. So the company I got it from is going to let me exchange it twards a new tv. So I figured I would upgrade some The 2 options i narrowed it down to are these.

    42" Grand WEGA

    or

    Phillips 42" Plasma

Now I do like the size and weight of the plasma....but its not true HD its only 1024x768, as for the sony its RPTV so not quite as sharp but will still look excelent I'm sure. Just kind of torn between the 2. Give up true HDTV for a plasma? Or give up the super sharp and vibrant plasma for true HD but still get a pretty darn good picture? The sony also has a built in tuner and cable card slot. I think the plasma only has the tuner no cable card slot.

Personally I'd go for a Sony over a Philips anyday...now if it was a Panny plasma it would be a tougher call...

I'm surprised the Sony doesn't look as sharp though... :scratchhead:

Cable card seems to be dying an ugly death, so i wouldn't weight it much in your decision.

Careful on the Philips Plasma, make sure the bugs are out. They are still trying to fix the hot capacitor problem, has to be repaired in home.

Yeah I looked at the same Sony at another store and it looks much better there. I think I'll go with the Sony, Its a little cheaper too . Why is cable card dieing out? I think our cable company still uses them.

IMHO one of the reasons the cable card is dieing is the DVR. Most every one wants a DVR, and unless your TV has one built in the cable card is only going to get you TV. But that is just a GUESS. I am not 100% sure.
The Bitterness of poor quality last longer than the joy of low prices.

Yup, lack of DVR, 2-way communication, hit and miss availablility and support from cable companies etc are all conspiring to end it's life. One place I think it REALLY could have take off was in HTPC's which have their own built in DVR capabilities and would allow HTPC users to watch HD from somewhere other than OTA. Sadly by the time all of MS's issues, the copyright issues and the software issues get worked out, cable card may already be dead and all of that too late

Yeah the cable card would be great for HTPC's that PC I got for free I'm going to turn it into a little HTPC for my TV :B. Wont be able to do HD really but I'll do some upgrades later when that need comes into play.
