    480p through component?

Does 480p work through through component or does it need a digital (DVI or HDMI) connection? Currently my screen says 480i and is connected component.

    also

My new 42 inch Plasma is 1024 x 1024 I notice many are 1024 x 768. Is there a good artical I could read that might help me understand how to get the best out of this format?
    Thanks Dan B

You may have to select a 480p option in your players menu to get it to send 480p rather than 480i.

As for the resolution of your plasma, all your sources will be scaled by the sets internal scaler and neither 1024x1024 or 1024x768 are really "optimal" but unless you plan on connecting all your sources through an external scaler with customizable resolutions... don't worry about it

Since you are using a plasma(digital fixed panel display), you may be better off using DVI/HDMI.

Is this where the "up sampleing" comes in?

Would it be worth it to buy a new DVD player? Mine does not have DVI or HDMI.
Is this where the "up sampleing" comes in? If DVI or HDMI truly give a better picture with a regular old DVD I'd probably do it. If it's questionable, I'd wait for the Blu-ray HD-DVD thing to sort out....

Try finding some pro reviews for your particular model. They usually try to compare the DVI/HDMI signal vs component. That will go a long way to figuring out if it's worth it

It should easily been seen as an upgrade over your Cenrtios dvd player. I think a Panasonic S77 would rock your world.

                  Upscaling is different than HDMI/DVI.

Using HDMI/DVI would clean up the signal path because you are going digital to digital instead of Analog to digital. Getting rid of the extra conversion will show a difference.

Upscaling is converting the signal to another resolution. Doing so may or may not provide an improvement. Likely I bet it does because I can't imagine that the Akai scaler is worth a damn.

Sounds worth while to me. Nice player, not too expensive either. Whats up with the silver these days? How many people have silver stuff in their living room? uff

As long as their HDMI/DVI input isn't of a much lower quality than their component input (which is not uncommon on less expensive displays) So make sure you test both.

Otherwise I agree an inexpensive but quality player should yield noticeable improvement over your current player. Something along the lines of that Panny or maybe the Oppo that's getting great reviews

I lashed out today and brought home a 42" Plasma

Rearrange the room, new cables connected, etc etc and everything works fine except for using the RSX-1055 to switch component video from the RDV-995.

                        Hi all,
I'm a proud new owner of the RSP-1068/RMB1075 combo and while I'm still getting used to the controls, I'm experiencing a system power-up problem that I'm wondering if anyone else has had. I'm switching my HD cable box and DVD player component outputs through the 1068 and into the DTV...

Hey there. I have been a music addict most of my like, and over the past few years I have discovered the awsome enjoyment that I get out of concert DVDs. Well, I quitely added this TV to supplement my front projection since I saw real quickly that I was going to crank a lot of hours on my PJ in a hurry. It's an HDTV monitor, the following applies: (Extracted from Plasma Depot since it was actually better than Sony's writeup.) I won't address each feature...
