i don't watch much tv programs, only movies, but i have a pretty decent sony xbr hdtv and wanted to bring out its potential, so i bought a denon 3910 dvd player because it upscales to 720 p or 1080i, i even got audioquest's best dvi cable, hooked it all up today and i don't see any improvement with upscaling, in fact, upscaling copmressess the picture on fullscreen dvds so it is even worse, am i doing something wrong or is upscaling a load of s**t
do you guys see an improvement when you upsale a dvd

Upscaling can have an effect on slightly increased resolution, but it's highly dependent on a lot of variables. Is it a load of "poop"? No, when done right with the right software and cooperative components in can yield a more pleasing picture. However, 480p component can still yeild a pretty good (and sometimes superior) picture depending on software/source/interconnects/display etc

Yes, I see a noticeable difference. I use "upscaling" DVD players on two different 720p displays in my house, one a 42" plasma, the other a LCD projector on a 10' screen. I find that upconverting doesn't necessarily make the image SHARPER, where lines are crisp and distinct, (such as on actual high definition material--you can't create new picture information that isn't actually recorded on the disc) but it does make the image CLEANER, where a good quantity of the video blur and clutter has been removed. If I look at an upconverted DVD, and then go back and watch a DVD in SD, the SD looks blurry to me, and the darker colors especially seem muddled.

Well, we're safe for now. Thank goodness we're in a bowling alley.

On my 55" Mitsubishi, upscaling produced a minor difference but not one worth fretting about or paying for.- Bottom

thanks for the comments, i spent some more time on it today, read the manual, checked the connections and i think everything is setup correctly, but there is more jitter when i upscale, i often check this by pausing the fbi warning at the beginning of movies, letters are sharp and stable in 480p, when i upscale there is a slight jitter, has anyone else had a similar experience
i am using a denon 3910, sony kv36-xbr800, and audqioquest dv3

Just did this last night, change my hdmi to RGB and upscaled it to 1080i to my Sony SXRD, looks great. When I switched back to my component, I noticed the difference, I am leaving it upscaled via HDMI.- Bottom

by JonMarshI know from a variety of questions and mail I get that a lot of folks are curious as to why upscaling DVD to HD or projector resolutions can offer any benefits. If you've seen it already, you probably don't have to ask, but if you haven't seen it done properly, it's a bit of a chicken and the egg situation-...-

by whmacsGuys,
I was just looking at another post that listed all the DVD's that come out on Nov 23. This got me thinking about the next generation of DVD formats vs the next generation of audio formats (SACD / DVD-A). When CD's were released it was a quantum jump over records and tapes. The same happened...-

by John HolmesI will keep this short.
I've had this player for a few days now. I must say that I am very satisfied with it. The HD-XA1 has very solid construction. Pictures IMO, does not do this player justice! It's a treat to the eyes.
The Tosiba has a very quiet and smooth operation....-

by BobLast night I had the privilage to watch an extensive demo of DVHS or D-theater (which is what it is being called) at Widescreen Reveiw's incredible reference video theater. I wish that at least one other member would have been there, not only to verify what I saw and heard but also because I am a terrible...-

by mwgwinOK, I embarked on a mission to buy a new home theater system and I thought I had everything down. Now that I have all my equipment, Im wondering if I should have bought a different receiver.
I bought the Yamaha RX-V1600 to go with my Dell 5600mp projector. What Im wondering is now that...-
