Is Sony Getting Out of Plasma?

    Hi,

I was just at Costco (Canada) and they had a Sony 37" Wega Plasma for $2,800.00 CDN> I checked on the Sony websites and can't find this or any other plasma sets. Is this last year's model? I also saw a 37" from some online e-tailer and it was listed at $4K US, not sure if it was the exact same model though. What gives?

    Looks alot like this one.

A quick search of Sony.ca lists no plasma monitors...

The price seems about right (pretty good) considering Futureshop is selling a 42" Samsung HDTV Plasma for $3500

There are still a few plasmas from Sony left. BUt they were all disc this year. Sony put all there Eggs into LCD and RPLCD stuff.
The Bitterness of poor quality last longer than the joy of low prices.

Not quite. SXRD is getting most of the nicer eggs.

Thanks for the replies. The whole exercise is moot however, I double checked the armoire measurements and the Sony is a 1/2" too wide. I can only find 2 options now that fit. A 37" Aquos (speakers on bottom) and a Viera 37" Plasma. Both $700 more than the Sony I saw yesterday :M .

Look around more for better pricing. My friend just bought the 37" viera for $2000 even in Calgary (Canadian $). It was a 12 hour sale held once a year but it shows you how much they can come down in price. Good luck with the purchase.

It's cheaper to produce an LCD panel and thus the reason for prices dropping in that market.

Sony has currently ceased all manufacturing of plasma sets. The Qualia line with the new Qualia 005 46" LCD will be the new thing...

Correct. Sony is out of the Plasma business and staying with LCDs.

The Bravia's are the new replacement. LCDs are cheaper, last longer, lighter and produce a pretty damn good picture.

That 37 Sony looks like crap! The Sharp will blow it away. Albeit that its LCD versus plasma.... but still MUCH better picture quality
