hello all I and extremely new to front projectors and T.V. s in general. I am looking to get a front projector for mainly dvd and video game use. My main problem is that im in college and still live at home so im in my bedroom mainly. It is not a small bedroom about it is about 18 feet by 12 feet. My walls are painted a very dark shade of blue( I am not a fan of light). I would like to install everything myself but I am just not sure how far away the projector should be from the wall. I am going to mount it on the ceiling. i am also unsure of how far away from the wall i should sit. I have read about the 1 1/2 diagnoal rule, but my eyes are extremely bad and i do not want them to get worse. I would like somethign somewhat small liek 80inches in width. If someone could give me any help of the distance of the frojector to the wall i would be very thankful.

Figure out what projectors you are interested in, then check to see the lens throw. Most have a variable (zoom) lens, with specs stated as 1.2-1.6:1 or such. Throw is distance from lens to screen divided by screen width. So a projector witha 1.5:1 lens would need to be 1.5X80" or 120" away from the screen/wall to give an 80" wide image.
Some do not state the throw, only the zoom (i.e.1.5X zoom). This means if the base throw is 1.2, the max is 1.5X1.2 = 1.8, so it has a 1.2-1.8:1 zoom lens. Either way, you need to find out the throw to figure this though.
A real good candidate for you is the Epson Home 10+. It has a really versatile lens setup that allows it to do a reasonably large image from very close or fairly far. It would do an 80" image in your room anywhere from about 85" to across the room. Its resolution matches that of DVD also.
The other good choice would be the InFocus 4805. Not nearly as versatile lens wise, and not nearly as bright, but probably a bit better picture quality and same price. Would have to go farther away to get the same image size.
