Highest Quality Path for DVD to TV

Which will provide the best video playback quality for DVD Video?
My TV doesn't have component video in, so I want to take the compomnent video from the DVD player to my H/T reciever that can switch it to S-Video and then to my TV. Is this a good move?
At present I'm using the S-Video out from my DVD player going straight in to my TV.
Should I change or stick with the present set-up?
Any help would be much appreciated.

I'd stick with that until you upgrade your display.

S-Video has only about half the chroma bandwidth of component connections, so with your older set, you don't have many options. If you find that the video switching function of your receiver works well, and it transcodes OK to S-Video, then go ahead this way. BUT, you may want to compare that to running the "native" S-Video signal from your player to your TV directly. I've used video switching systems in the past and thought they were OK, only to discover some quality loss when comparing to a direct feed. Just check it out for yourself to be sure.

I guess trial and error is the best way to find out which is the best arrangement, thanks for the advice!

Direct is always your best path.

Connection paths go like this in order of how much better they are than each other:

          HDMI > DVI > Component > S-Video > Composite > RF

Sometimes HDMI/HDVI is not better than Component. It really depends on your set.
