I'm going to try and find more information on Jane Austen, Volumes 1 and 2. Favorite author of my wife and both daughters really like her too.

Keith, Volume I has Emma and Northanger Abbey, and I can't find any info on Volume II.

However, just released last week was Jane Austen: The Complete Collection:

      Synopsis:

This collection includes the complete works of Jane Austen in over 22 hours of classic television. These timeless novels spring vividly to life in lovingly remastered original productions from the BBC. Full of wit and charm, these adaptations provide a relaxing escape into the elegant and romantic world of 18th century England.

      Northanger Abbey
      Pride And Prejudice
      Persuasion
      Mansfield Park
      Emma
      Sense and Sensibility

      Ratio: 1.33:1
      Image: Color
      Sound: DD Stereo (CC)
      Lenght: 1,320 minutes

Thanks David. If it's the Pride and Prejudice with Colin Firth, it is perhaps the best adaptation of a novel from that period ever made. I remember my wife and oldest daughter begging and begging me to watch the thing. I resisted until one night I thought I'd watch about a half hours worth at midnight. Well, I couldn't stop and watched the whole five hours, even though I had to work the next day.

Same thing happened just recently when my youngest daughter wanted her 11 and 12 year old friends watch it. They protested like crazy at first, but, after a while, they couldn't be pried from the TV. They watched the whole thing again the next day after inviting more kids over.

I just went to imbd and it receives a score of 9.2, which is pretty amazing because the highest ranked picture of all time, The Godfather, only receives a 9.0. It's only received about 4,600 votes though, so I guess that's why it hasn't been listed, but, if it was, it would be ranked #1 all time. Pretty impressive huh?

Well, I prefer The Godfather (actually, I even like Godfather II better than I), but Jane Austen fans are fiercely loyal to their favorite author. By allowing five hours, it made it possible for the film to take on the true flavor of the novel. I wish they'd do that more. Can you imagine something like Band of Brothers being a 2 hour movie?

Warning: In case anyone was thinking about buying the Jane Austen pack that just came out, be advised that I just spoke to my wife and she said that that is not the Pride and Prejudice David and I have been discussing. The Colin Firth one is with Arts and Entertainment, not BBC. When I asked my wife, she said, "That's (the BBC) a different one and it's not very good."

I'm not sure on Passion yet. I loved the movie and thought it was easily the best movie of this year so far. Then again it was so emotionally taxing I'm not sure I could watch it again. I may just wait for the SE that supposedly is coming early 2005(around Easter or in February).

There are several movies with fewer than 5,000 votes in the IMDB "Top 250 movies as voted by our users", including "Battleship Potemkin", "La Strada", "Bride of Frankenstein", "Sleuth", "Red River" and "Judgement at Nuremberg". The main reason "Pride and Prejudice" didn't make the list is probably because it was produced as a TV mini-series, not a movie released initially to commercial theaters.

Comparing scores for high quality productions in different media is kind of like saying a diver in the Olympics is "better" than a gymnast because the diver got a 9.9 and the gymnast only got a 9.78. Both are sensational and both can be viewed on your TV screen, but...

In any case, you'll want to make sure you get the right one. (Thanks for the heads up on that.)

                  Burke

                    Shane -

I know where you're coming from on your quandary about whether to buy the forthcoming "Passion" DVD or not. I have a few movies in my collection that I thought were absolute masterpieces when I viewed them in the commercial theater and yet, for various reasons, I cannot bear to watch them again now that I have them on DVD.

A couple of them suffered from really bad transfers and watching them that way spoils the memory of the excitement of seeing them on the big screen. That may be remedied in the future with a better DVD release. These are easily candidates for replacement and rewatching at that time.

Others, though, are in the category you describe, being emotionally wrenching, or very taxing to watch, and therefore not candidates for repeat viewing despite the quality of the production or their status as "great films". At some point they find their way into my collection just for "completeness" if nothing else. But I'm in no hurry to acquire them and if something more "entertaining" (that I would watch over and over) happens to catch my attention at the same time, I'll buy the one I'd watch more often.

                    Burke

With Passion, the reviews other than the movie, have been stellar. THey are saying reference quality video and audio. This I have no doubt. I may hold out for the SE coming in February. I'm a collector afterall...
