    Whale Rider

Whale Rider is likely going to be one of those movies that unfortunatly not enough people will see. The plot summary from IMDB is the following....

On the east coast of New Zealand, the Whangara people believe their presence there dates back a thousand years or more to a single ancestor, Paikea, who escaped death when his canoe capsized by riding to shore on the back of a whale. From then on, Whangara chiefs, always the first-born, always male, have been considered Paikea's direct descendants. Pai, an 11-year-old girl in a patriarchal New Zealand tribe, believes she is destined to be the new chief. But her grandfather Koro is bound by tradition to pick a male leader. Pai loves Koro more than anyone in the world, but she must fight him and a thousand years of tradition to fulfill her destiny.

Although its set in NZ it doesn't use the same breath taking landscapes the LOTR's does but its still a beautiful country non the less and that shines though in this movie. The story itself is quite powerful and its no wonder its a film feastival winner all around the world.(details)

I highly recomned this rental :T

In case you missed the Oscar nominations list

I realize the list has been posted elsewhere due to its overriding interest / value as an HT topic. But it seems appropriate to highlight it here as well, since it has at least a tangential relationship to the movies. :>) (Source: Houston Chronicle) http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/story.hts/ae/movie...

    Checked out this movie yesterday.

    CGI:
Whatever team did the CGI for Ghost Rider this time was awesome! They paid attention to so many little details. For example, his head is on fire... so the leather around the fire was constantly bubbling the way leather really would while...

    A Christmas or Holiday tradition

    A Christmas tradition of sorts.

Yeah, sure, we usually watch the Santa Clause, and I guess next year, SCII as well.

But my own tradition is the Die Hard trilogy. lol. I watched I and II last night. I myself, always thought 1 and 3 were the best, and 2 was just a bad acting...

    Ghost Rider - hmmmmph
    by David Meek

The title of this thread pretty much sums up my feelings on Ghost Rider. I bumped this up in Netflix queue because it looked like some good, silly fun with Nicholas Cage. In brief, it wasn't fun. It wasn't good. It felt like something that was thrown together to get Nick another...
