This is a Warner Bros. release from 1941. The film was based on a story by W.R. Burnett, a prolific writer of that time. He co-wrote the screenplay with John Huston. It's about a convict ( played by Humphrey Bogart) who is just released from prison but gets right back into action by getting involved with a heist of a resort near the High Sierras. Along the way Bogart's character ( Roy " Mad Dog" Earl ) meets up with a family who have a granddaughter in her early twenties with a club foot. Bogey puts the money up for the operation that allows the girl to live a normal life. He had hoped the girl would marry him but such was not the case. Instead Bogey gets involved with another girl ( Ida Lupino) who was with one of the other two men who will be involved in the robbery, but was mistreated until Bogey steps in.Things go awry and Bogey ends up in a shoot out high in the Sierras.
Though Ida Lupino got top billing, this was really Bogart's first film as a leading actor and he never had to share top billing again. This film is a good example of what Bogart had in store movie goers everywhere. Here he plays a hardened criminal and a killer, yet he is shown to have a soft spot for wronged women and homeless dogs. In the end you find yourself pulling for the guy. Only excellent actors can pull that off.
This is a crisp black and white print that looked as good as the first time I saw it as a kid in the theater, and I have been waiting a long time for it to be released so I can add it to my collection.
This was FOUR STAR material for its day. It is :5: material for movie buffs like me, who may be a little long in the tooth.
