    It's INDY Day! Woohoo!

Yes everyone, today's the day. The Indiana Jones triology comes out on DVD! arty:

Who's going to Best Buy? Who already has their set? Be careful, the widescreen version of the collection is shown above, and the fullscreen (hiss, spit) is in a light tan colored box.

Yeah, I'm bundling up my 3 laser discs and taking them to my son tomorrow, then I'll be making room on my dvd rack for the box set.
The good thing about these LDs being replaced is that The Temple Of Doom was in P&S, the only one available at the time I wanted it. Now I'll have all 3 in widescreen and with that extra dvd resolution and (hopefully) great DD 5.1 audio.

I got mine, although it wasn't 34.99, thats a damn good deal. I think I paid 44 or 45 something.

I'm keeping my laser discs. The only one of the three movies that I really care much for (as in "a lot") is the first one, Raiders of the Lost Ark (ROTLA), which was the first movie I owned and played via my Beta Hifi deck years ago, and ditto my first VHS Hifi deck, and again for my first laser disc player. (Since ROTLA wasn't available on DVD when DVD became a commercial product, I inaugurated my first DVD player with a different title. With ~750 DVDs added to my collection since then, I'm sure glad I didn't wait for ROTLA before I fired up the DVD player.) :>) I finally got to see ROTLA in a commercial theater last summer at a special early bird showing here in Houston. Over the years I've watched it enough times to be able to recite dialog. (But I don't do it out loud if others are also watching -- I hate it when people do that.) :>)

Since I really don't care all that much for the other two (as in "hate" Temple of Doom and only mildly entertained by "Last Crusade") and have heard that the 5.1 soundtrack sounds disembodied from the movie with "Raiders" (hated that effect with the "modern sound" re-scoring of "Alexander Nevsky") I'm going to pass on the bundled DVDs and save my money for some other titles coming out later on (can you say "Two Towers Extended Edition" and "Matrix Revolutions"? ) :>)

I don't feel like I'll be missing much by not springing for the Indiana Jones DVD set. But I'll be interested to hear how the rest of you who do buy the set feel about your investment when you've had a chance to play the discs. Enjoy!

Picked up the WS Boxed set today for $49.97 CDN
Unfortunately this is being put away for Christmas, so it will be a while before we can watch it..

I have been waiting for years to get this trilogy on DVD, and picked it up today on sale for $39.95.

I have all 3 of these movies on LD, but my ROTLA LD was a crappy 80s P&S transfer, and while the other LDs are widescreen and look OK the 1st one was the chief movie that I was looking to replace.

And so ROTLA was the one that I popped into my PC this afternoon to see how the picture quality was, and I was truly impressed. While not perfect it is a day-and-night improvement over my old laserdisc version and it looked just great.

I'm definitely going to get my money's worth with this DVD set, and I'll be looking through the extras DVD sometime soon as well.

I watched ROTLA last night and it was awesome. I never realized how much that movie emulates an old comic book story.

Got my set but the cheapest I could find was Walmart at $56 CDN. Don't matter. I paid that much for the ROTLA laser disc a few years ago.

Interesting side note: Walmart had 2/3rds full screen and 1/3rd widescreen. Most of the holes in the rack were widescreen. When are these retailers going to wake up and smell the widescreen roses ?

I picked this up on Tuesday(since its my day off). I currently have the laserdisc set in widescreen as well.

Comparing the 2, there are drastic(IMHO) differences between the 2. The audio and video on all 3 are anywhere from great to very good. They are way better than the laserdisc(PCM) audio wise and way better video wise.

I wouldn't hesitate picking these up.

I put Raiders on over the weekend. The Picture quality was a good step better than the laserdisc, but not as good as I had hoped for. Still, that extra detail is well worth the price.

I should point out that to many the PQ will look much better than the laserdisc, but the real test of video is how good it looks on a high resolution projector on a big 16:9 screen 80" or more. In my case, it is a 92" wide screen and this can make you well aware of a dvd's shortcomings in the PQ department. I'm hoping Last Crusade and Temple are a little better than Raiders. But like I said, the extra detail is certainly welcomed regardless.

Watched Raiders and Last Crusade this weekend.

I was rather impressed with Raiders' PQ/SQ considering how old the film is. I've never seen the laserdisc versions so can't comment there. There were some "soft" images, but overall the detail and color fidelity were very good for a 23-year-old movie. There were a couple of noticable dropouts (about a second long) in the audio and a couple of spots where the dialog level dropped very low (again, for a couple of seconds), but that's about the only negatives I could come up with.

Last Crusade being a much newer film, definitely was a step up in quality though. No disappointments there at all - PQ or SQ.

Didn't watch Temple as it's my least favorite of the trilogy. I'll eventually get there though. Has anyone checked out the "extras" disc yet?

I agree with george on this one. We watched it last night and its not a reference transfer by any stretch of the imagination but then the movies 20 years old so you can't expect too much. Still I don't think it looks as good as say Ghostbusters that was redone.

I thought that the PQ was very good (even on my 180" screen), but I only have the previous LDs (and VHS/S-VHS to compare against.

I've been workig through the extras disc and the featurettes are informative and enjoyble to watch. What surprised me tha most was that I had always associated the Indy movies with Spielberg, but just discovered how much Lucas was behind the making of these movies.

It was Lucas' story originally, and Indiana was HIS dog (in addition to being the inspiration for Chewbacca).

It's nice because some real effort was put into the featurettes, and most all of the principals (cast, writing and direction) were interviewed. Plus it's nice that they cover areas like special effects for all three films together.

                                  -Dean.

I'm saving the featurettes for after I watch Temple and Crusade. But Dean does make them sound interesting.

There is a little-known provision in the DVD-Video specification that allows pan-scan information to be included on a widescreen DVD title so that the end user can select one of three viewing modes. These are:
