    Magnificent Seven 2016

Gave this a whirl tonight. I’m a big fan of the original so was a bit wary regarding a remake. In the end, nicely done. Faithful to the spirit of the original while standing on its own. Worth a viewing for any Western fans.

the first two have to rank V high in the all-time best & desert island lists....

the latest one, i saw a while ago, but remember being unmoved..... especially with the predictable ending....

i was not expecting a great movie, but my hope that it would pay honorable homage to the originals was at least met....

I was a teenager when I saw The Seven Samurai on a late night movie channel. It was quite the stretch for me to watch a long movie with sub titles at that age. I never regretted it, though. Absolutely one of my favorite films. Japan was just coming into its own when I was a kid, and there was still a lot of general disregard for things made in Japan. So, just to be different I decided to watch it. One of the best acts of rebellion I ever engaged in. LOL

I'm gonna "Me too!" that. I even liked the version with the modern (at the time) soundtrack. This is getting strange. We're somewhat disparate individuals with much in common. Have you seen Silent Running? Maybe it was my age when I first saw it, but it had a huge impact on me. It can still make me weepy. Gawd, how embarrassing. LOL

                hell ya!!
it was film that got me hooked on Bruce Dern....
im sure i cried when i first saw it as a kid....

another one from that time in my life is "A Man for All Seasons"....
i still try to watch this at least once a year to keep me grounded....

my favorite quote from the movie that i use often:

Margaret More: Father, that man's bad.

Sir Thomas More: There's no law against that.

William Roper: There is: God's law.

Sir Thomas More: Then God can arrest him.

                & this one, too:

William Roper: So, now you give the Devil the benefit of law!

Sir Thomas More: Yes! What would you do? Cut a great road through the law to get after the Devil?

William Roper: Yes, I'd cut down every law in England to do that!

Sir Thomas More: Oh? And when the last law was down, and the Devil turned 'round on you, where would you hide, Roper, the laws all being flat?
This country is planted thick with laws, from coast to coast, Man's laws, not God's
And if you cut them down, and you're just the man to do it, do you really think you could stand upright in the winds that would blow then?
Yes, I'd give the Devil benefit of law, for my own safety's sake!

Silent Running was some of (IMO) Bruce Dern's best work. He brought his quirkiness and anti social air to the side of right. An opportunity rarely afforded him in his roles. He generally ended up more like The Detective in The Driver (another guilty film pleasure of mine). That movie is just a carousel of plug n play morality. Every time I watch it I end up dizzy trying to sort the "bad" bad guys from the "good" (not really) bad guys from the "bad" good guys from the ineffectual good guys from the innocents (there are none!). The driving and Bruce Dern are really the draw, the rest is set dressing. Then again, Ryan O'Neil has that effect on me. Well, excluding Paper Moon, and then his daughter upstaged him completely. LOL

It's been quite a while since I saw "A Man For All Seasons". Now I'll have to hunt it down. I saw bits and pieces a year or two ago, but was distracted with other things and couldn't really enjoy it.

                      by George Bellefontaine
I finally got around to watching this. It was one of the many titles building up on my YETTOBESEEN rack.I've seen this movie more times than I can remember, but always from my VHS copy. Now I have it in glorious widescreen with a transfer that MGM did properly. Hell, they even put an excellent hour...
