Fences mends my attitude on a few levels....
it has been a V long time since a film has moved me to this degree.
Denzel Washington & Viola Davis, along with the entire cast of this August Wilson penned story take the art of acting to a level normally reserved for only the best stage productions & deliver it on film.
in & of itself, not a task to be taken lightly.
producing a film of this deep character study, staged in the hometown of both August Wilson & myself, could easily have ended up as one of the most powerful barbiturates known to mankind.
au contraire, we (i) was pulled without reserve into the lives of each character as if i lived with them every day.
the faults of all men are stripped to white, chalky-dry bone.
there is no forgiveness, no respite in time as it marches on.
no reason for error or injustice, no hope to dare think redemption will be offered.
though others may divine a message of hope from this story, it will still be as profound & earthy as anything one has ever seen, heard or read.
An absolute masterpiece, imho.
