    The Hurt Locker

This is Kathryn Bigelow's take on the war in Iraq. ( BTW, Kathryn is James Cameron's ex ) It follows three bomb squad soldiers in Bravo Company who deal with IEDs. Jeremy Renner is the sergeant who wears the suit and diffuses the bombs, while Anthony Mackie and Brian Geraghty are the lookouts and protectors. It's a gritty look at an unconventional war where the danger lies more in a hidden bomb than in contact with the actual enemy.
Renner, the main character, is complex and difficult to understand until a decision he makes at the end of the film. Then you finally get him.

I read elsewhere that some military personnel, who actually did bomb squad detail in Iraq, do not feel that the film is as accurate as it appears. But it is accurate enough to know that Iraq is a dangerous place at a dangerous time. I liked the film and highly recommend it to anyone. It's one that sticks with you long after the credits fade.

BTW,There are some small and well acted roles by Guy Pearce, Ralph Fiennes and David Morse.

This one gets a big :T from me and is now part of my collection of war films.

Sounds good, I'll check that one out. I guess Cameron's Avatar and his Ex's film are running neck and neck, with both having won best picture awards. I guess it's going to be "War of the Roses" at the Oscars this year. Some say Kathryn has the better film and no woman director has won a Best Picture award at the Oscars. So, given the politics of the situation, and the underdog factor, ... I suspect Avatar is going down.

Thing is, Cameron spoke highly of his ex's film and expected her to win at The Golden Globes. I haven't seen Avatar as yet, but I would say The Hurt Locker is a huge contender for an Oscar.

Yeah, I was just taking the cynical perspective. But, I'm glad that's not the case and that they still have an amicable relationship. I haven't seen Avatar either, and won't until it comes out on Bluray. My ears won't tolerate a loud or even a not so loud theater. I'm sure The Hurt Locker is very deserving of an Oscar from all accounts I've heard ... look forward to seeing it.

This was a great film. I don't think your comment is unusual - Avatar was nice eye candy but about an hour too long IMO and storywise nothing to write home about.

                  Hi George,
I just finished this film. I watched in several parts, so I could watch it on our large high definition rear projection TV. This TV has a fan that bothers me after a short time, so I watched in parts. The picture on Bluray is excellent and the sound was good as well.

Very good film! I really enjoyed it. I liked the story and the characters that were well developed. I did find that some of the military arrangements seemed kind of unrealistic, but I don't think that I would have noticed it had you not mentioned the comments made by actual military personnel. It does seem to stick with you after you've seen it, like you mentioned.

                    Glad you liked it, John.
I'm happy for Ms. Bigelow, too. First female director to win an oscar for directing and best picture.

The wife & I watched this one two weeks ago. We both feel all the accolades are well deserved.

Haven’t seen many Hollywood films this year, but it was by far one of best of any of the films we have. I thought Star Trek was V good from the pure 'entertainment' aspect & the acting and character development exceeded all my expectation.

I thought it was Ok, not best picture material. Really, for the most part - what here have we not seen before? You couldn't tell what was going to happen almost scene by scene? They would have a fight between them, by standers would get it, he would go back.

I've seen this basic movie with some variation based in Somalia, Bosnia, Vietnam....and now Iraq. It was a good movie, but I don't think it was that special.

Yes, but I found the presentation different and I loved how the characters came alive, something you don't see a lot in war movies, save for some such as Saving Private Ryan. This is what made it best picture material for me.

I'm not sure it deserved the Oscar for Best Picture, but I did not see many of the others up for the award. However, it was well done and, as George notes, the characterizations were more fully realized than a lot of other war films.
