Lots of $10 Blu-rays out there

Local stores are really offering great deals on Blu-ray discs, most selling at $9.99. Unfortunately I own most of the titles, but I am picking up some of the Bond titles, including Dr. No that I only had on laserdisc. But for anyone just getting into Blu-ray, now is the time to snap up some of these titles, that include:
    Reservoir Dogs
    Dodge Ball
    Most Bond titles
    Wyatt Earp
    Terminator 2
    Basic Instinct
    Cutthroat Island
    True Romance
    Under Seige
    Big Trouble In Little China
Resident Evil ( first one )
    Both Transporter movies
    The Departed
    The Brave One
    Predator
    Commando
All Rambo titles except the last one
    Mission Impossible one and two
    The Devil's Rejects

and a ton more I've forgotten.

Some of the titles are at Walmart and others at Future Shop in this area. I don't know about the selection at their Halifax locations but I'm sure they have plenty.

Last night Amazon was having a wicked sale, but I'm not sure if it's still going on.

My only concern with $10 Blu-Rays is with their picture quality.

Since many of the bargain BluRays are the same editions that cost $25 or more last week, I'd rather be disappointed with picture quality at $10 than at $25. :>)

              Does 1080p look worse on the $10.00 disc's? :W

No Ken it doesn't, but many of the early release Blu-Rays had inferior picture quality.

I haven't come across any that didn't look good in my renting/purchases so far, the only thing I noticed is that some early generation BD's used PCM audio.

Was it mainly the technology to convert older movies to 1080p like DVD up-sampling?

                    Agreed.
One that comes to mind is American Psycho.

Many early Blu-rays used MPEG2 compression same as DVD. New releases use AVC which is a much more efficient codec. This doesn't necessarily affect picture quality, but coincidentally many of those early releases also suffered from poor transfers. See the re-mastered The Fifth Element as a good example.

Nothing wrong with PCM audio though. TrueHD and DTS-HD MA are converted to the same PCM before analog conversion anyway. The compressed formats are just more efficient, much like AVC instead of MPEG2.

It's true that some of those early Blu-ray releases were just so so and not much better than dvd, but many of the titles I am seeing are fairly recent reeleases like The Transporter and its sequel, The Brave One, The Devil's Rejects, the first Transformers ( this one was $12 ), Fool's Gold etc., plus I bought several Bond titles and they are all AVC. So there's definitely some good titles out there for $10, many of which I already own and paid $25 to $30 for.

I had to be careful with the Amazon sale. They had several for sale for $9.99 or less that WERE found to be bad quality... I wish I could remember which ones specifically. However, they had "Spaceballs" for $9.99, so I'm still considering that one.

I have found that the Blu-ray PQ Thread on AVS is a pretty good indicator in general.

Another good source is the Blu-Ray website. Go to Reviews and then sort by video performance, or just use this link. NOTE: when you change letters (ie. go from the A's to the F's) you'll need to resort by video performance.

Just scored Patriot Games for 9.99$ at Future Shop. They had a few others at that price but none that interested me that I didn't already have (often purchased at twice the price or more, sadly :M ).

Sheesh. :stupid: Saw I, Robot for $10 at Wal-Mart and passed on it as I wasn't sure of the PQ. I just checked and according to the Blu-Ray site it's one of the best available, ranking right up there with Iron Man. I'll grab it the next time we go back to the mainland.

Oh, yeah, Tex, even the dvd is stunning and almost HD in appearance. I haven't picked it up yet on Blu because i keep forgetting to, and I do believe it is quite cheap here as well.

Actually George, that's the other reason I didn't pick up the Blu-Ray. The upconverted DVD is very good looking in itself. But, if the Blu-Ray is that highly rated, who am I to say no? :B
