This is a film released in 1978 that starred Dustin Hoffman. It was recently released on dvd, and since I had never sen the film, I decided to buy it. It is the story about a man ( Max Dembo, played by Hoffman ) who has spent many years behind bars but has been released and facing straight time. He hopes to change his life by finding a job, a place to live and maybe even a girl. Well he gets the job and meets a girl ( a young and pretty Theresa Russel) but his indifferent and obnoxious parole officer ( M. Emmet Walsh ) has him arrested for possible substance abuse and after that all hell breaks loose, leaving Max on the run and heading down a one way road to disaster.
Hoffman rarely plays bad guys but when he does he really does. He makes you feel compassion for him one minute and distaste the next. The film was based on a book by ex-con Ed Bunker and Hoffman apparently spent a lot of time with the man before and during the shoot.
A really good film with excellent acting all around, which includes the likes of Gary Busey and Harry Dean Stanton. If you get a chance to rent it please do so. You won't be disappointed. And if you are a Dustin Hoofman fan as I am, you may even want to own it.
