    Young Frankenstein. . . . THE MUSICAL?!?!

Yep, you heard it right here folks!

I was listening to NPR (National Public Radio) on the drive/crawl into work this morning and heard an interview with Mel Brooks. One of the things that came out of it was that since his The Producers had done so well as a musical on Broadway, he is going to do the same with Young Frankenstein!!!! This, I've gotta see. I wonder if it'll be Matthew Broderick and Nathan Lane again? :B

Are you looking forward to Rooney playing old Frankenstein in the casket holding onto the ancient book (now THERE's a possibility for a strange musical number) or his heir, the doctor, who recreates his experiments and, with Igor's help, creates a "monster" with Abby Normal's brain? :>)

As for "Young Frankenstein" following in the footsteps of "The Producers" to Broadway success, "The Producers" (the movie) already had a few musical numbers before it was transformed into a Broadway musical:

      • Franz Liebkind's medley on the roof top and in his apartment (including "America", "Deutschland Uber Alles", "Yankee Doodle Dandy" and a German song that repeated “ja, ja, ja, ja” a lot); :>)

      • LDS’s "Love Power" ("Is this where they're auditioning 'Boomerang?' "-- "I'm afraid you've wandered into the wrong theater." -- "Wait, wait. THIS is 'Boomerang'! This is 'Boomerang'." -- "What are you saying?" -- "Let's hear him. What have we got to lose?");

      • "Springtime for Hitler" (about which, the less said the better -- gotta see it to disbelieve it); :>)

      • "By the Light of the Silvery Moon" (the song in the bar while the producers were celebrating Springtime’s “failure”), and

      • the show-stopping “Prisoners of Love” (“We open in Leavenworth Saturday night!”)

From those beginnings, with (quite) a few more numbers, "The Producers" blossomed into a big Broadway hit.

"Young Frankenstein" (the movie) also has a couple of scenes with songs: “Roll in the Hay” when Doctor Frankenstein first meets his lab assistant and later, a super duper musical number featuring the good doctor and his "monster" singing Irving Berlin's classic from 1930 -- "Puttin' on The Ritz". (Their rendition is hardly distinguishable from Fred Astaire's.) :>) And some of the dialog in other scenes just begs for musical treatment. (“What knockers!”)

So making a Broadway musical out of another Mel Brooks movie is not really so far fetched an idea. But can lightning really strike twice? Time will tell.

          More Young Frankenstein

Hehe, some of my favorite moments from this Mel Brooks classic:

"Igor, will you give me a hand with the bags?"
"Certainly, you take the blonde and I'll take the one with the turban."

          "It could be worse."
          "How?"
          "It could be raining."

          "Abby who?"
          "Abby Normal."
          "Abby Normal?"
"I'm almost sure that was the name."
"Are you saying I put an abnormal brain in a 7 1/2 foot long, gorilla? IS THAT WHAT YOU ARE TELLING ME?!?!?!"

          Hahahahaha!

George, that's a new one on me. I'm going to have to watch it again tonight and see. Actually it's about time for my Young Frankenstein fix anyway. If I go too long, then :thud:

What??? You have a hump on your back now like Igor??? Better be careful with that heavy lifting. :>)

In the movie, Igor's hump starts out on his right side at the train station:

Dr Frankenstein: "Incidentally -- I don't mean to embarrass you in any way, but I'm a rather brilliant surgeon. Perhaps I can help you with that hump."

to which Igor repiies: "What hump?"

and by the end of the movie, (like in the scene where Igor is helping Dr. Franlenstein entice the monster back to the castle by playing musical instruments) it has migrated to his left side.

That's right, Burke. I watched it last night to be sure I wasn't imagining things about Igor's hump. " What hump ? "  No matter how many times I watch this flick I always find it hilarious.

Okay, I had a massive brain fart (I guess). ops: Yes, I've seen Gene Wilder go to pat him on the hump and go "Wasn't. . . ?" Hmmm, where's that Ginseng tea?
