The original "Ghost in the Shell" is a classic -- I'll be looking forward to reading your impressions of the sequel. Unfortunately it probably won't play in many commercial theaters over here, if at all. We'll have to wait what seems like an eternity for a home video release to be able see it. (Or visit Japan.) :>)

Hey Burke, at least you'll have a chance of it showing at The Greenway or River Oaks. Whaddaya think my chances are with the one-movie-a-week Seaview Theater here?
        :B :

I did read a blurb that it would be released theatrically in USA in late '04.

I can't wait. That movie looks awesome. Ghost in the shell was one of the first movies I bought and I always thought the movie looked 3D.

OK, saw it Sunday (in a surprisingly large-for-Japan theater). It was sans subtitles, so can't tell you much about the engagingness of the story, although from my very limited Japanese it felt similar to the first.

Animation is definitely stepped up in quality in 8 years. This was a very beautifully done movie, with a lot of very compelling locations and scenery. Also continued the very strong industrial design of the first, as well as the "cinematography". I will definitely buy the DVD when it is released (not just to hear it in English), and hope the video quality is better the GitS was (good but not great).

A great deal of CGI is used (obviously), but everything blended nicely, and some of the effects they were able to achieve were dazzling.

On lunch in the field at work here, so I'll add some more comments next week when I return from Tokyo.

Saw a couple of interesting previews, one for an animated feature called Appleseed (some connection author or director-wise to GitS I think) and one called "Steamboy, sort of Rocketeer meets Atlantis thing about a young boy and his steam powered adventures against evil.

                  A few more comments.

Some of the settings in this movie were really unique and beautiful too. Interestingly, all the OSD and "through the eyes of the robots" stuff was in english. Meant that, havinng freshly viewed GitS, could follow the plot fairly well.

One thing with the CGI and lavish backgrounds, at times it tended to give the characters a drawn in look, as did their movement (very japanese styled, which may or may not suit you).

Also, when they draw closeups of Bateau's bassett hound, didn't need his under the tail area to be anatomically complete and accurate .

Anyway, if you like animation on any level, I'd see or buy this as a beautiful display of technique. May go see it again. (Back to Japan on Saturday.)

This hits theaters here this Friday. It is likely on DVD in Japan, whither I go in 1.5 weeks. Anyone super hot for it on DVD pipe up, as I will be getting a copy for myself. Typical Japan price is $30-40, and not likely to have any English track, or maybe even subtitles.

I hadn't actually priced it, buit other non-animé movies I'd looked at there were typically in that range, so I just assumed.

I kind of decided to wait for a version I can at least read the subtitles on anyway though. I was pleased to read that they are not re-dubing this movie into english for U.S. release, so the 5.1 will likely be still in Japanese with ST, even here.
