My brother-in-law was telling me that they're going to release the extended version in theaters around the same time it's released on DVD. It's to tie people people over until they release the 3rd one.

Acutally, they are releasing both movies in the 2 weeks before ROTK. Extended versions in many theaters, but not all. FOTR the first week, TTT the second. This is being done as a promotional tool for ROTK, not as a standalone money maker.

"RINGS REDUX: New Line Cinema will release special expanded editions of the first two Lord of the Rings films in theaters worldwide two weeks before the Dec. 17 opening of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. The studio wants to refresh moviegoers' memories before the final installment arrives."
