    Jack Bruce RIP

My favourite bass player Jack Bruce died yesterday aged 71. A very sad day. Jack was best known for his work with Cream in the 1960s.

Last night I watched his 1998 DVD 'The Cream of Cream' as a tribute. It's half documentary, half live (performing in the studio with Gary Moore and Gary Husband). If you want to be a bass player in a rock, blues or jazz band, or if you just want to learn a little about Jack Bruce and his approach to music then this DVD is well worth watching.

    Nigel.

    What an amazing career.

After some digging around here are some of the highlights of his life that stand out to me:

Just a few of the people he played with:

    John McLaughlin
    John Mayall
    Billy Cobham
    Gary Moore
    Joe Bonamassa
    David Sancious

He was trained as a classical cellist, and considered himself a jazz musician.

At the 2011 North American Music Merchants Show, Bruce became only the third recipient of the International Bassist Award, a lifetime achievement award for bassists, after Jaco Pastorius and Nathan Watts.

Roger Waters of Pink Floyd recently described Bruce as “probably the most musically gifted bass player who’s ever been.”

    Fair thee well, Mr. Bruce.

Oh , hell. The losses keep piling up with the birthdays. Who'd have thought Ginger Baker and Eric Clapton would have outlived Mr. Bruce ?

man, that's sad. 3rd player to receive that lifetime achievement award, that is significant. Cream of course, goes without saying was special. playing with Joe Bonamassa, that's pretty big too as well as the other names. I have heard Joe B stuff recently, not as familiar with some of the other musicians.

          RIP.

Amen to that. KR looks like people jerky , but he looks like happy people jerky , and that's what counts.

              Cream Reunion DVD – wow!
              by bigburner
Last night I watched the DVD of the Cream reunion concert which was held at the Royal Albert Hall in London over 4 evenings in May this year.

As a long time Cream fan I had anticipated the reunion with some trepidation, fearful that it would be a sad get-together of elderly men unsuccessfully...

I picked up this gem because of a glowing review in...I think it was spin magazine, it's "Jack Bruce; Cities of the Heart" on CMP records.
Having grown up listening to Cream, West-Bruce and Lang, and other works of his that don't come to mind right now, I thought I knew what to expect....

Last week a friend brought around a damaged DVD disc which wouldn’t play in his DVD player or laptop. As I work in the software development industry he assumed that I would naturally have a solution for his problem (people think I can fix their PCs too).

              Well I’ve spent hours and...
