    Serenity - A Micro Review

A continuation of the Firefly TV series that was cancelled after only one season - a mistake IMO - Serenity is the brainchild of Joss Whedon (writer and director), creator of two of the more successful TV series of the last decade: Buffy The Vampire Slayer and its spinoff Angel.

A young psychic woman has been freed from an Alliance research facility and taken on board the Serenity, a ship captained by ex-war hero Malcolm Reynolds. The crew of the Serenity specialize in smuggling, robbery and in general doing whatever they can to stay employed in the post-war era. The fact that they all fought for the losing side in the war and are on the run from the Alliance is just another thing for them to cope with in their daily lives - until they find out that their young passenger may be more dangerous - and valuable to the Alliance - than they thought.

It's an intelligent movie that lets you use your own mind to fill in parts of the storyline. The characters are for the most part 3-dimensional, solid and not exactly what you expect them to be. All in all, a refreshing departure from the normal Hollywood cardboard cut-outs. The story itself ties back to the Firefly shows, so familiarity with that TV series will be a plus but it isn't necessary to enjoy the movie.

PQ is good, with decent FX, and sound is better than average. Maybe not up to the cutting edge standards of today's mega-budget blockbusters, but good enough not to detract from the story.

Already being a fan from the Firefly days, I give Serenity :4: out of :5:.

DVD comes out at the end of December. I want to see it but I want to know what's going on so I'm picking up the series boxset soon then I'll catch the dvd. The people who I know that have not seen the series but have seen the movie were so so on the movie so I'm positive that my experience will be different if I see the TV show first.

Only vaguely heard about the series a year or so ago, then bought the DVD set back in June- loved it. Saw the movie recently, will probably see it again in a week or so.

The movie has to tell more story in the two hours than the series would do- I'd recommend picking up the series and at least watching the pilot first. (which is a double length intro. Fox having such brilliant suits in managment ran the pilot LAST- whereas it's what sets up the whole series. The series has more time for character development, and was pretty remarkably done for TV. The movie is definitely grittier and has more edge in several regards... more I won't say.

Two thumbs way up if you like the idea of a well cast irreverent space opera, with unusual influences and ideas, and with well defined characters.

We've had several discussions here in the Guide about the show "Firefly", which spawned a movie "Serenity". It's really interesting how the public interest in this show not only stayed strong after it's cancellation, with some noticeable uproar, but there's STILL quite a bit of...
