Kingdom of Heaven tops US box office

The epic battle tale Kingdom of Heaven fought its way to the top of the box office, taking in $20 million in its debut weekend, but the film did little to boost slumping revenues at the start of the summer movie season.

The film by Gladiator director Ridley Scott features heartthrob Orlando Bloom as a warrior in Jerusalem between the Second and Third Crusades.

The film also features Liam Neeson as Balian's father, the knight Godfrey of Ibelin, as well as Jeremy Irons and Brendan Gleeson.

The R-rated movie was followed in the rankings by another new R-rated movie, House of Wax, which brought in $12.2 million, according to studio estimates Sunday.

"House of Wax, featuring Elisha Cuthbert and Paris Hilton in a remake of the Vincent Price horror tale, is the latest from producer Joel Silver's Dark Castle Entertainment.

The other notable new movie this weekend was Crash, which features Don Cheadle, Sandra Bullock, Matt Dillon and rapper Chris "Ludacris" Bridges in intertwining stories examining racial stereotypes in Los Angeles. The R-rated film played in 1,864 theaters and finished fourth with $9.1 million.

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy dropped to third place with nearly $9.13 million after debuting last weekend at the top spot.

Hollywood's box office slump continued with revenues down for the 11th straight weekend compared with the same weekend last year.

The top 12 movies grossed $76.9 million, down 24 per cent from last year at this time when Van Helsing and Mean Girls were the top movies.

$20 million ? Isn't that less than half of what Gladiator did on its opening ? I do know that Gladiator did over 456 million worldwide so Kingdom has a long way to go. I've read a few reviews and articles on KINGDOM and it looks like this film will be one of those love it or hate it things. Still, I like Ridley Scott's work so I am sure I will enjoy Kingdom one way or another. Just wish he would have used someone other than Bloom for the main character.

George, I'm doing a review on KOH, but I'll hop in here and say that Orlando Bloom surprised me. He CAN carry the leading role in a major film. I saw him do it yesterday. :T

Unfortunately I'm finding David to be the minority with that opinion.

$20 million on opening weekend for that movie is appalling and only shows how weak it was. Usually week 2 is a telling sign if it flops or not and this week has Star Wars so expect the Box office to be light for anything other than that. Basically I expect a flop here.

Its unfortunate, as I though KOH was a great film.

Has anyone tried this DVD yet? After Gladiator and Black Hawk Down, I have high expectations of Ridley Scott's DVDs. I was just wondering how PQ and SQ of this DVD compared to those of Gladiator and B.H.D.

I will start shortening things up here. And just get to the salient points. But first, let me say this. Up to this point Heavens Gate was the biggest disaster in the history of filmmaking, at least from the perspective of the investors. At $40 million dollars it bankrupted UA studios. Books have been...

The Ice Harvest is film noir
              by George Bellefontaine
I really love those great b&w film noir movies from the 40s and early 50s and The Ice Harvest fits right into that category, only it is film noir in color. It stars John Cusack as a seedy lawyer ( he represents the mob, among other things) and Billy Bob Thornton as a lowlife who teams up with Cusack...
