Phono Stage on Rotel RC-985 Preamp

Im new here. I have a Rotel RC-985 preamp hooked up to a Rotel RB 1070 amp running B&W 602 S3 speakers. Im currently using a Thorens TD 147 turntable in this setup.

Im wanting to upgrade my cartridge on my Thorens to a Ortofon Rondo Bronze which is a $900-1000 MC cartridge. Some have said this cartridge is overkill when using it on my Rotel, stating the Rotel is underclassed to use with the Ortofon I picked out.

I have heard the phono stage on my 985 preamp can be quite good, but I'd like to hear comments from others. How would the phono stage fare today? Would an outboard unit sound better then what I have currently? I have been told the Dynavector 95II is a good choice for a phono stage, but its up there in price too. I also looked at the Jolida JD-9A phono stage.

Any comments on the phono stage of my Rotel? And what parts do they actually use in the phono section? Are they- (sowters, jensens, b&b, etc?)

    Phono stage? What's that??
    by nicholtl
Hey all, so I've been doing some research and getting interested in adding a turntable to my system. Lately, I've been looking at the VPI Scout with JMW 9 arm, which is usually sold as a package on several online sites like audioclassics or acousticsounds. Some of you guys might know of it from a...

    RC1090 phono stage

Anyone RC1090 users happy with the phono stage on the pre? I recently purchased a Rega P5, Exact2 cartridge and TTPSU (power supply unit) but have yet to hook up - need to rearrange. Just wanting some feedback on the quality of the phono stage. When I bought my first pre, RC1070, I bought because...

    RDC-7's Phono Stage
    by Burke Strickland
Anyone else "into" vinyl? NOT the kind you wear -- such as 1970's disco pants :>) -- but rather, the kind you spin for music. In other words, LPs!

One nice feature of the RDC-7, which you won't find in many competing models, is the built-in phono stage. Given the superb...

    Phono stage upgrade
    by borat58
I have the following system : VPI Scout turntable with Ben Micro Ace (high output) cartridge, MF A1008 amplifier and ProAc Response D25 speakers. I am using the built-in phono stage. Often in the audio press there are disparaging views on phono stages that come as part of the amplifier and the general...

    RC-1090 phono stage
    by miner
Have recently got back inot vinyl. Rig consists of a Rega P5, Exact cartridge & TTPSU. I am happy with the sound but am always tweaking. Would a outboard phono stage <$500 improve the sound over my onboard PS? A writer who did a review on the RC-1070 said the phono stage was worth the cost...
