Audio output question on the RDV-1060

I just got the RDV-1060 dvd player. It has a couple of options for audio output. Multi-out, optical and coaxial. One of the configuration for audio out in the manual is for DVD-audio. In it, they use the Multli-Out connection for DVD-Audio?

Do I really need to use that or can I instead use either the optical or digital coaxial output? Is any one of these better than the other for DVD-Audio? I'm asking this because of the diagram in the manual for DVD-audio connection calls for the Multi-out and my understanding is that you can use either digital coax or optical out.

    Thanks!

    Two different connections

    bambahtg9700,

I also have the RDV-1060. The optical and coax digital outputs are for transmitting a digital stream from the 1060 to your processor/pre-amp/receiver (for processing). I prefer digital coax. To me it has a smoother, more dynamic sound. Also, coax digital has less processing steps than optical. The multi-channel output is simply for DVD-Audio disks. The 1060 will decode DVD-A and sent out analog signals via the multi-channel outputs. You would need to hook all six of these up to the multichannel inputs of your processor/pre-amp/receiver to listen to DVD-A. DVD-A does not go out throught the digital connections.

    Hope this helps.

thank you htsteve. that was very helpful. any i use any old set of rca cables for the dvd-a connections? or do i need to slurge for better cables? just wondering if the quality is much different. thanks again.

        Be Shure!

Be shure to connect a regular pair of RCA audio outs to your 1060... Use a regular analog RCA input on your Preamplifier...

        With a music CD:
Listen using the Digital connection, then switch to the analog RCA connection and I think you'll be surprised what you hear.

The 1060 has an excellent analog output section...

Just my 2 cents (Music does matter)

          Analog vs. Digital

          bambahtg9700,

Andrew makes an excellent point. Depending on you processor, the RCA output form the 1060 may sound superior than a digital connection to the processor. Trying both ways is a smart idea. you ears will let you know.

With respect to cables for DVD-Audio, I would recommend using some good analog cables (I wouldn't use the cheap stuff that comes with most electronics). This forum sponsor (catcables.com) has cables that will do this. It's up to you to figure out how much you want to splurge. That decision could be helped by how much DVD-A you plan to listen to. If you plan to do most listening throught Non DVD-A, then this is where I'd invest in good, quality interconnects.

          Hope this helps.

I'm considering selling my RDV-1060 due to not beeing satisfied with the sound compared to an old Onkyo DVD player I have (and it not beeing able to play DVD-RW).
I find the highs too sharp and the lows not tight enough. But I didn't consider this option....
Would a analog connection to my RSX-1056 solve some of the problem ? Any suggestions for cables ??

            Thanks

I think the RDV-1060 connect via anologue to my RSX-1056 sounds better than my RCD-02 to my RA-01. Okay, so it's a lot more expensive but it's not that long ago that virtually no AV equipment could match even entry level hi-fi seperates.

Previously on this forum there was a discussion regarding optical vs. coaxial digital interconnects. I personally favor optical for the isolation factor, but there was some discussion as to whether cheap optical receivers/transmitters could cause errors.

I had the pleasure this last week...

                Optical vs Coax
                by orangebull
Is optical or coax suspose to be better for digital audio connections?

I am connecting a Denon 2900 CD/DVD player and a dish network receiver to my 1098 via the digital inputs.

I also use the multi-inpu/output from the Denon.

                thanks, OB

                TOS-link or Digital Coax?
                by Rock Dog
Of course most people think that by nature an optical cable for your 5.1 or 2 channel audio is automatically best because it's "DIGITAL." But in this end of the market (the end this forum is built and based on.) I've seen more arguments against this thinking.

                New digital coax burn in

Hello all. I just got the Harmonic Technology cyberlink platinum digital coax for my Denon 2900 and my first impressions of it is its a little thin. Do digital coaxials need a burn in time? I swapped out a $35 Straightwire digital coax and found the HT to be a less than desirable sound. It sounds as...

CS DAC in RSP 1098 & optical digital MacBook
                by sirbogey
Is it correct to assume that my MacBook can be hooked up to the RSP 1098 thru optical digital (Toslink to MiniPlug) wire and the sound will be directly decoded thru 1098's Crystal Semiconductor's 24 bit/192kHz DAC without the need of another external DAC.

                any thoughts. :T
