today i was dissapointed i got out some cds and dvd audio and played music in 2 channel and all surround modes and adjusted it every way it just don't sound good to my ears. its to clean sounding if that makes sense. the highs are to high i tried to turn the treble down and ended up at -10 the highs are gone but the mid is gone too. i saved up money for 9 months to buy this receiver now i have 1200.00 to spend on some else
i realley wanted to buy this receiver i spent hour researching this receiver. i played it for 2 hours then boxed it up it's going back bummer

No i don't use tone control on denon alll set a 0. this realley bummed me out because i waited so long to get this receiver my heart was set on it
the receiver was great looking, built qualty, i wanted it. but it just didn't sound right for my taste. two years ago i demo a marantz, yamaha, denon. the marantz was the worst. yamaha sounded better but at high voulme it crapped out the denon sounded the best to my wife and me. so my dealer had a sale i got a close out denon 2801 and it turned out to be pretty good unit for what i paid for it i don't know what else to say

I'm sorry it didn't work out for you. You will obviously tell the dealer it didn't suit you, so the dealer will certainly ponder it and, hopefully, give you some input. My speaker setup is similar to yours, so it just goes to show everyone has different tastes. I wouldn't say the Nautilus tweeter is bright, but it is definitely on the robust side. If you like the Denon sound, give their latest models a look. They may be what you are looking for after all.

Wow... that is not a typical response to Rotel vs Denon comparisons, especially for music.

Out of curiosity, for 2-ch music did you try the digital connection to the Rotel as well as the analog from your CD player?... might make a difference.

In the end, you know best what your preferences are, and it's certainly reasonable if the Denon pre-amp section produces music that suits you... maybe your upgrade could be an outboard 5-ch amp to add to your 2801, like maybe the Rotel RMB-1075.

                  By the way... GO HUSKERS!

yes it was hook up via optical link. but the tv was hook up with rca. i din't want to unhook all cables from the denon. i had all day to think about it and all i could think was it didn't sound warm as the denon did. i guess thats the sound that my ears like the rotel is a better built then my denon so all i have to say if you are thinking of buying rotel and you like sound go ahead you can't go wrong my dealer is the best he carries denon, pioneer elite, rotel, p.s. do you think the rsx 1065 sound the same as the 1055 he is having a big one day sale in november with 20% off that was when i was going to buy the 1055. time is running out mark GO HUSKERS

Toslink sucks IMO. I went to dig coax, and now I'm back to analog for cd. Theres a definite difference between the 3, optical being the worst in my setup.

Was this a brand new unit ? I hated my 1066 when I first set it up, it was very harsh, but I persevered and it steadly improved over a week of running it in.

If the dealer hadn't run it in for you, then it maybe worth persevering.

Yes, 'breaking in' new equipment can make a difference, but it can be argued that it's more psychological than electronic... I think it's equal amounts of both... for better or worse, it took a while for my Rotel integrated amp to grow on me.

What I believe is more certain is that various audio products do sound different.

But don't feel like you should get the Rotel just because we favor it here (it is a Rotel forum after all)... Denon makes perfectly fine gear... trust your own ears for audio quality.

And don't feel rushed to make a purchase just because a sale price has a short time frame... there will be other sales.

But do try to find out if the Rotel has been broken in, or is fresh out of the box... the more information, the better.

                            8O I'm shocked!

Okay, it has to be one of those two things. Either the components need to break in still or you've become so accustomed to the Denon's sound that your brain doesn't like hearing something different coming through your ears. I guess this is also proof that you should always listen to gear before buying, not everyone's ears are the same.

                            Still shocked 8O ...

This thread just proves once again that sound is HIGHLY subjective. I love the sound of my 1066/1075 combo. Prior to purchasing this setup I purchased a Denon 3803, it was the brightest sounding receiver I had ever listened. I returned it the next day after my headache subsided and went and purchased my Rotel gear. Bottom line, buy what sounds best to your ears. Listening at a dealer is fine and dandy, but the true test comes when you bring it home.

Perhaps your comparison wasn't fair. I have a DVD/CD player (pioneer elite) and have a TOS link for 5.1 digital stuff (movies) and analog interconnects for music (Straightwire Chorus). I tried my music through the TOS and there is no comparison to the sound from my analog interconnects. The interconnects sound MUCH better. The TOS in comparison is tinny (still decent sound but nothing like the interconnects. Which brings out the warmth in my speakers and more depth and complexity. Perhaps you should take the 1055 out again?

I'm back; i took the rotel back to the dealer and they were disapointed.
after talking we loaded up the minivan with denon 4802 to try out i hook it up the same way that i hooked the rotel up turned it on sound like my 2801 just better. so it seems like my long road to get a receiver is now short i may look at a 3803 or 3804 if it come out .
the denon was a demo and the rotel was a demo for about 3 months
