Guys heres a thread can post about some classic pieces you might own or have come across from musical fidelity

below is my all time favourite the Musical Fidelity Tubalog !

something I bought myself brand new in 1993, yep 21st birthday party coming up for this one soon ! and man this thing has stood the test of time just so well:T



dusted it off yesterday and having listened to it. it is just an absolute beauty. sonically lovely detail, the jan philips 6922 tubes it has on its output stage impart a lovely warmth. In soundstage it is enveloping. Just bathes you in its sound. and in imaging and details it places instruments and voices distinctly. WOW amazing really for the vintage of this piece just how good it sounds.

One I hope goes many many years guys it sure is a favourite for me

any pieces like this have come across from musical fidelity that like to share with us about ?

Aha ! A bit of important info I left out

It's a Tubalog ! Cost me $1800 which was quite a bit of money 20 years ago. And I got it cheap retail price was $2200 back then

It's the 2nd Dac I believe mf ever produced following the digilog(which mf claim is the first commercial standalone dac ever sold)

I understand the tubalog had some commonality with the cdt cd player that mf had with same 6922 valves on the output stage. With the tubalog being a full dac that was subsequently released.

In years to come mf continued their love affair with dacs with many more fine pieces at different price points that followed

have taken my bedroom system down the retro path....

and I dont know there was some longing to unpack the old gear and get setup. A longing to hear again..so didnt waste anytime and here it is...





musical fidelity X-ray cd player(circa 1998) and apple tv, Musical fidelity Tubalog valve DAC (circa 1993) as source and Musical fidelity X-A2 integrated (circa 2000) as amp feeding my focals

and quite pleased with the end result I must say

while had some apprehension going from something like the the flagship nad master series combo I was running to some gear from decades past. this old gear is making quite a sweet combination ! theres some of that focal - musical fidelity magic I love. Great detail if slightly reticent and warmth of vocals and rich bass. I've given myself the option of being able to use either the inbuilt dac of the x-ray or the tubalog valve dac for output. It sounds great with the x-ray and the valve dac adds some lovely valve bloom and added richness to bass....loving it.

Definitely a nice system to kick back too. Still a bit of tidy up to do in the cables and dusting etc and will take a picture or two of the overall system over the weekend

Glad you're enjoying it again! You hit on something which has always been a tough call for me, keep or sell my old equipment. To date, I have held on to most of it. Mainly because I never know when I may want to play with it again. Most of it was only retired because some new feature or codec forced it out. Almost never was it because I was disappointed with the units performance. Good gear is good gear. Regardless of age.
