    Speakers for A21

    Hello again folks,

My set up is now: Halo A21, Primare PRE-30 and Primare D30.2 CD player, with Audioquest Emerald interconnect cables.

Now I need a pair of speakers for stereo, towers, not bookshelfs. :T
Room size is 48 square meters.
I listen only to progressive rock :W

    Budget is U$ 7000.

    What do you suggest?
    Best regards,

    Dario, Brazil

I want to pair the A21 up with cjd's dayton RS 3-way towers, as seen in the DIY area here. I think those were being budgeted at $1000 a pair, that leaves plenty for professional cabinet building.

My personal trend is toward magnetic planar or electrostat speakers, I like the way they sound and will be buying them as my next speakers. You may want to audition those technologies too.

        Well Dario,
I own the same combo, consisted of PRE30 and A21 - I am glad you followed my recommendation of a mating preamp for A21...
Speakers? I achieve truly stunning results with B&W 803S - just about budget margin you specified... Price in Macedonia 4800Euro pair. Follow me advice again - no mistake friend, I am very cautious purchaser.

My recommendation would be a pair of Magnepan MG3.6. They are $4,350.00/pair here in the US.

                Hi Zoran,

I'll try to listen to the 803s.

But tell me, are they really good for rock?
And do they deliever great bass?
                Best regards,

You should try, Martin Logan, Revel or Thiel .

B&W is the most overhyped brand in my opinion, I heard them all and only the 802 and the 800 is not bad, but not superb .

The problem is that a 801D is to greedy when it comes to amplifiers. The huge bass needs just to much power to sound well. Though they claim: Power Handling 50W - 1000W into 8 ohms on unclipped programme. It should be at least 500W and upwards for a descent performance.

                                  Dario,

Get the Nautilus 803! They are not too away from the 803S (I've been listening to both). This is not the bassiest speaker around, but can rocks! Ideal for classic and acoustic music, outstanding for jazz, very good for rock.

Dario, my rocky friend... Sorry, but my impression is that both Halo A21, and particularly PRE30 - are not the most suitable electronics for rocking the house (power aside - quite enough into A21). They are just too subtle and refined sounding units, pitty to miss those advantages. From that point, I would prefere Rotels, say RC-1090/RB-1080 or alike. Rocking speakers? I don't know. Monitor Audio (UK) perhaps...

Dario says he listens to progressive rock... To me that means RUSH... IMHO it can't sound much better than in a pair of Maggies... :T

Of course it's a matter of preference. Are you looking for deep/rumbling bass or quick/responsive bass. If the latter is the case, then Maggies are great. If the former is what you're looking for, you will probably achieve the best result with a pair of subwoofers in addition to a pair of reasonably good speakers... Or the best of two worlds: A pair of Maggies with a pair of subs.

                                        Peter

They are just too subtle and refined sounding units, pitty to miss those advantages. From that point, I would prefere Rotels, say RC-1090/RB-1080 or alike. Rocking speakers? I don't know. Well I guess, you don't like detail, punch and control if you prefer a Rotel RC-1090/RB-1080 instead of an A21. I had an RC-1090 for about 4 weeks, untill I compared it with an A21. The Rotel lost on all aspects from the Parasound which had more control, punch and details.

But Primare is indeed better for some slower music, I heard Primare once in combination with Thiel CS 2.4 and CS 1.6, I wasn't overwhelmed to be honest .

Rotels? No way, I prefer the A21 :W

[QUOTE=Peter Nielsen]Dario says he listens to progressive rock... To me that means RUSH...

Yes, but only a few albuns by Rush.

IMHO it can't sound much better than in a pair of Maggies... :T

Maggies, AFAIK, are not available in Brazil.

I want strong but controlled bass, and wouldn't like the need to use subwoofer(s) :T

Then you need to make sure that you get very efficient speakers (say 100dB/W/1m) or you will need a more powerful amplifier than the A21.

How about Klipsch? They are known to be extremely efficient... Jamo and JBL are two other names that come to mind when talking about efficient speakers...

You are welcome . At the moment I am testing a pair of Revel M22, and they sound ;x( . At the end of June I can test a pair of Thiel CS 1.6.

I listen to all kinds of music, but most of the time it is metal. And it seems those are perfect for that kind of music. Excellent detail, stage and speed . I can't use bigger loudspeakers due the measurement of my room. Maybe and F32 of the Performa-series would fit better in your case, or an Ultima Embrace.

                                                            Hi Peter,

I have a pair of Klipsch RF5 and can't stand it no more!
The midrange is horrible, I moved them to the home-theater system, and the family liked them there.

Although not on my list of top choices, I may try to listen to Jamo.
                                                            For JBL, no, thanks.

And folks, I don't listen to my prog-rock in loud volume!
