My 20 year old 804 Matrix speakers...

are just sounding so ….muddy these days. My processor was a Lexicon DC-1 but it died and I pulled out an old Adcom GTP 565 ….even before the switch it sounded like this. Im using another 20 year old —Adcom 555II as an amplifier.

I’m ready for any and all suggestions in finding a remedy….…thanks in advance..

( Cannot believe I just found this forum…completely made my day)

Id say I have a budget of about 2000 to fix this problem...

Are you sure all your driver are working and the speakers are not accidentally out of phase?
    Main System:
    B&W 801D
    Emotiva USP-1 Pre-Amp
    Chord SPM-650 Stereo Amp
    Oppo BDP-105
    Squeezebox Touch

    Second System:
    B&W CM7
    Emotiva UMC-1
    Emotiva UPA-2
    Oppo BDP-83SE
    Grant Fidelity DAC-09

DC-1 was never an extremely clean pre-pro. It was ok for home theater, but not as good for music. The Adcom may not be much better. The MC-1 was a great improvement musically. The MC-8 and 12 though, were vastly improved. I use the MC-12 today.

Bottom line is, junk in, junk out. You need to clean your path from source to the speaker. Determining the weak link is the difficult part. It could be a speaker issue or driver issue, but I think you need to operate your speakers with a clean front end to know for sure.

I would carefully check the speakers. Are the screws still tight enough, and if yes I would even check the connection to each speaker unit. The cable clips can create bad connections. Finally do check that all units are actually working. You may have a blown tweeter.

          My Movie Collection Has Shrunk
          by George Bellefontaine
The latter part of last year my movie collection was pushing 2000 titles with half of them being VHS tapes. Some of these tapes were bought in the early eighties just after vcrs came out, and others were dubbed copies of rental tapes. There really was a lot of junk in there as well as close to a hundred...
