Most people wouldn't think of having an H/T system without a subwoofer. (or two) They aren't necessary though. If you aren't into action movies or in a situation where you have very close neighbors you may not need one or want one.

As far as adding to the sound quality, if you get a good sub and integrate it properly with the rest of your speakers, you will really enjoy the extra sound. Subs are the hardest speaker to get right and if not set up correctly, they can detract from your overall sound quality.

      Nomrodasis,

I agree with this. An HT really needs a sub. A quality sub will be a wonderful addition. Integration is the key.

      Hope this helps.

I'm sure you can 'hear' a great movie with good mains but to 'FEEL' it you need a good sub...LFE's might be a bit too much for most mains.

I would never think watching a movie without a sub. For music and live concerts I´ve learned the 5.1 including SW isnt needed for my tastes. When you´re into highend stereo and feel how incredible is that experience you wont back to 5.1 for music.

You cannot compare the two, the DB1 will go so much deeper and effortlessly. That comes at a price of course.

u can consider CM sub or PV1D. They will match well with 800 series.

however, the "problem" i found on DB1 and PV1D is the side firing configuation. U will hear the sound but not really feeling the sound. In subwoofer, i would like to feel the impact.

If that's what u like(impact), looking for front firing sealed sub. 12inch and larger woofer size. something like SVS and Veladyne offer many good subs for less money than B&W

Not to stear you away from B&W subs...because they are good....but also they are expensive. I've found SVS and Velodyne identical in terms of what you can get at a lot cheaper cost... might want to check them out.

Velodyne I think has a little more musicality to it and SVS geared a little more towards HT use. But both have a lot of textile feel to their bass (as in you can denote different types of sounds down low). I personally went with SVS for my sub as I only like to use it for HT and leave 2ch in a pure 2 speaker config.

Like I said though, not trying to take anything away from B&W.

                        i think i'll stay with b&w
i have 1 disadvantage in my system
                        i got 804 di and htm4di but cm5 rears
so i havent decide what more important 805 di or a new sub (same cost)

In europe SVS and velodyne aren't as cheap. So the price argument really depends on where you live.

I have been thinking lately about the sub I am running with my Statement Monitors. It is a DIY sub consisting of a 3cf sealed box, a Dayton 15" Titanic driver and a 500 watt Bash amp. It recently stuffed it with polyfill to try to tighten the bass up a bit. I am also thinking of building a ported...

I'm building a HT system for my future appartment, honestly not sure what size the room will be, but i want the sub to be something i can use in most situtions. Right now it looks like im going to build a set of Nat P's (probably a tower design)
