My Theta Digital Pro Basic III died

This wasa great DAC and served me for many years. Unfortunately it no longer will sync with my digital sources and I'm told Theta Digital cannot service it.

Please recommend an equivalent or what you feel is the best alternative DAC below $1000. The DAC in my AVR-4311 just doesn't cut it...

Oh, and this Theta was paired with my B&W N802s...

Is your Theta DAC a Version A? I have one and love it! Maybe you could repair it? It could be your input receiver chip (CS8412) is bad. This chip is in a socket and can be easily replaced.

Don't know, how would I tell if it's version A? And are you saying only version A can have the chip replaced?

      What does the chip do?

Mine is working again for the time being.

This is one of those tests and write ups I've ben wanting to get around to for some time, but there always seems to be something more immediately urgent to distract me from the effort. Well, there still are those things, but I figured it's time to get this done because I'm...

        The J-Box III Review

The J-box is a device that I’ve often looked at on AliExpress, but I don’t see much or any talk about it really on DIY forums, not English speaking ones anyway. It looked quite interesting to me as an all-in-one measurement system; the poor man’s alternative to...

        Buffalo IIISE and Unbalancer DAC/Linestage

Built a delta-sigma DAC/Line Stage as shown below:

The DAC module is the "Buffalo IIISE-DAC", which is based on the ESS Sabre32 Reference (ES9018) DAC chip and accepts direct DSD, I2S and S/PDIF inputs supporting up to 32-bit/192kHz.

        A liner power supply...

DAC on Cd Player or Pre-Amp
        by toledoguy
I've recently started rebuilding my system from scratch, it's been slow going as funds become available. Something has been bugging me for a while and I thought I'd ask my fellow knowledgeable forum members for help. How do you know whether the DAC on a given CD player or the Pre-amp should be used....
