No. In general, I am speaking of a whole class of small amps, often SETs, that demonstrate a lovely, clear sound when a selected non-challenging program is played over very high efficiency speakers. Use with more challenging programs and/or loads reveal anemic bass and contricted fortissimmos. Not my cuppa tea.

      Exactly.

        MD,

Of course there are wimpy Class A amps, as there are wimpy A/B amps, and D amps, and G amps. Just because something is Class A, doesnt make it the best or semi-invincible to load and impedance shifts.

All Class A is is that the amp runs at full capacity regardless of the load the speaker presents to it.... that's all it is.

I was always intrigued with those small amps pushing so little watts and no switchover to B when needed.

Interesting essay. I'm covered either way according to his point of view, as the Pass Labs 250.5 is an AB Amplifier with the first 35 watts in A only. So I am not "passe" as he says, but "au courant" mon ami

Why do speakers have a max watt rating
                by bleeding ears
Whilst pondering which amplifier and which output wattage would best suit my speakers, I became a little confused about the whole amp/speaker wattage compatibility issue.

Eg , if speakers can handle wattages well above the manufacturers specified maximum rating, why do they specify...

I believe good information will get lost soon, so I formally request that a mod sticky this and potentially lock it, as this is fact and not up for debate.

Often times people get lost on a spec sheet. We have all been guilty of it from time to time. How much do we really need...
