    Upgrade from 802 to 802D?

Hi guys- Newbie to the forum here, found it as I was doing some research for the new B&W's.

I have the opportunity to sell my 3 year old 802's for about 4.5K and I can get a killer deal on the new 802 D. BUT, is the upgrade worth it? I love the way the new ones sound but can't compare side by side with my 802's (which I happen to love as well). I think the new ones sound a little sweeter in the top.

If you've had the opportunity to hear them side by side, please share your experience.

    Thanks,
    Pio

I did have the chance to hear them side by side and,,,the 802D won!!!! The bass has improved from the 802 and the the new diamond tweeter DOES make a difference. I have had them now for about five months. AND have not regreted the choice. The biggest issue I had was finding an amp that brought out all the 802Ds had to offer. After trialing B&K, Mcintosh 402, Krell, Bryston and Rotel the Bryston won. I bought a pair of Bryston 7BSST c series mono blocks. The 802Ds can be played with lower powered amps BUT, the real personality of the 802Ds really comes out with an amp that can deliver the powere when needed. Bye the way, THERE is room for price negotiation. I was able to get them for $1,500 off of the "retail" price.

      ED K-

Thanks for the response. I know the 802D sounds better, but does it sound that much better to merit an upgrade? I'm using a KRELL Showcase as a pre/pro and Sunfire amps. I have the signature amps powering the fronts and they have plenty of oomph @ 600/chnl.

Also - is $4,500 for my old 802's a good price?

        Hi,

I don't know what the "killer price" is on the 802Ds but the upgrade cost but be in the order of $4000 to $5000 even with a very very good discount...

For my ears the 802D is at least twice as good as the 802s everthing is better, even the midrange and imaging (perhaps better integration with the tweeter and I know that have seriously changed the Marlin head)...

If you have the money and love the B&W sound - I say go for it...

          Geoff-

Thanks for the insight. A killer price is $10.5, that's 2k off SRP. Selling off my old 802's means only 6K out of pocket. I'm going to do it! Thanks again.

            Pio,

            Good decision :T

Make sure you post here and let people know how youy go once you have upgraded (and the 802Ds have broken in). There are many people here in a similar situation and I know they would love to hear from you....

Check out the new Dec 2005 Stereophile mag - not only did the 802D make the cover but it was well reviewed. I'll post as soon as I get them in about one week, and then after break in.

                Thinking of upgrading - 802D? 803D? Keep my CDM7se?
                by karelm
Hi, I'm a new member and have a few questions. I currently own a pair of B&W CDM7se and want to upgrade to the new nautilaus line.

At my local B&W dealer, I auditioned the 802D which looks fantastic but I found the sound stiff considering its intimidating price and design. It...

                802D at low volume
                by smjc99
I was wondering the ability of a spkr like 802 Sounding with classe AMp like 5200 at low and hig volumes

Does an 802D sound/reveal more detail at medium and high volumes only or is it equally good at low to moderate volumes?

Is this more of a function of amplifier capabilities...

While trying to pick spkrs for front Left and Right, what else is a good comparison to 802D's . I want to evaluate spkrs of simialr calibre ( till now I liked Thiel Cs2.4 , ofcurse thy are not at the same price point as 802d;s which I also love, did not care for Paradigm signature S8's )

                by beden1
I have the opportunity to purchase a used pair of 802's, and had recently been focusing on getting a pair of 802Ds that I had been auditioning in a B&W dealer store. I have not heard the 802s to compare.

I really like the 802Ds as the highs and mids sound very articulate to me, and...
