  • What to build with parts on hand? Recommendations needed

As technodanvan works on the "Singularity" build, while waiting on his Ardents to be completed, I too am eager to start another speaker project while the Isiris Mini design is being developed.

As opposed to buying additional drivers, I figured I check my current inventory and...

    ESS AMT1 "Great Heil" tweeters

I contacted ESS, and it appears these tweeters can be purchased again. I had the experience of hearing these tweeters recently, and although the specs aren't "perfect" the sound is magical. I'm considering buying a pair to try with a W22EX midrange and RS225s woofer. I think this system...

Here are some teaser pics. Sorry no measurements yet...

Oh and I bet you thought I was kidding when I said 'drywall shims' .....

Top end using these tweeters is light and airy. Even running a single speaker there's a 'depth' to the...

Build your own speakers! Start with an Air Motion Heil tweeter, the big chunky 4.5kg one from the old ESS AMT1 A to D built in the mid 70's to the late 80's. For a very small room 8 inch woofers in a sealed box otherwise 10 inch ones , has to be flat to 1000Hz+ and the XO with a Behringer 2496 Ultra...

Most impressive. How do you like those Accuton Mids? Is the Heil tweeter easy to work with? I used to have ER4s and they were a pain to voice properly.

The tweeters you see that look like ribbons are actually not. In the slender black speaker was the Eton ER4 Heil Motion. In the large tower, the Visaton MHT12 magnetostat, which is also used in the GMK7s. My wife's speakers are speakers "built for her system" so I don't get tempted to...

    Thanks David

That hotlink reminded me of another of my favorite speakers. I used to own a pair of Heil ESS AMT-1 Towers that had a transmission line for the woofer. Rather than get new surrounds the woofers, I sold them. My brother in law still has his pair, along with a pair of Martin-Logan...

  • Don't take me wrong I'm not poopooing krell either Its a fabulous amp it's just not that good of a value. Of course, that is relative, compared to a Halcro its a steal :B And I must agree the 80's were the heyday of audio, CD's digital DSP etc, many trully audiophile brands in competition. In the...

    Those are some big bats!

Tweeter material has always been an object of bragging rights to manufacturers. The truth is that there is much more to it than
just what its made of. Personally the best tweeters Iv'e ever heard were HEIL type devices, but even with...

Alright everybody.... how about a little update on your progress with some of the speakers you have been working on from either this thread or new developments.

    I'll start. I've tried 3-ways with W22, W15CH, OW1, then RS225, W15LY, OW1, then RS225, W15LY, and C12, and currently I am...

Is it bad to use the Seas MCA?. . . answer- no. However, unless you have a lot of experience tuning crossovers, even if the response on axis and power response look good, the phase characteristcs and other variables may be difficult to tame in a 3-way speaker. I spent the last year working on a 3-way...

    Hey John,

Basically I'm never going to be "finished" with any one particular way of creating a loudspeaker. I learn from each new experience and I have a long way to go. My 2-way I finished up was with one RS225 per speaker. I'm very pleased with the Heil tweeter, but there...

Some tweeters that I have listened to that don't have the best off axis response are eton ER4, and Great Heil. Both sound pretty good off axis (say 30 degrees) depending on what type of music you like.
