    DTS Announcement

This may be old news to you but not to me. I was catching up on some audio magazines I had piled on the lamp table and saw in one of my The Absolute Sound that DTS announced it has developed a LOSSLESS, yes lossless compression scheme that is a simple extension to their existing codec! Unfortunately I don't have the article with me to refer to for more details.

Hehe, I can only imagine what those DVD soundtracks are going to sound like! arty:

They have to start with it somewhere.

If it takes off in commercial theaters (and not just "large format" a.k.a. "IMAX"), I'd give it about five years to show up in home systems. By then we'll probably also have blue-ray technology discs or whatever in general use with considerably greater storage capacity.

It makes sense to have commercial movie soundtracks encoded with the "lossless" codec first, anyway. What would we play back via a home version if that were not the case? "Lossless" transcriptions of already "lossed" soundtracks? :>)

Ther proper word is lost not lossed. What is previously lost cannot be found (reclaimed) by any system.
