    Sony gives details on PS4

Controller pictured with screen on it, I didn't see a image of console. Some graphics samples available.

The PlayStation 4 will feature an X86-64 AMD Jaguar CPU with 8 cores, an AMD Radeon GPU and 8 gigabytes of unified system memory. Like the PS3, it will also feature a Blu-ray drive. (For more on the specs, check out our story here.)

There are some pretty neat things they talked about that I have to say I'm a bit excited for.

Can't say there's anything there that would make me want to trade up--no sign of SACD support, nothing that indicates it will be a better BD player in any way. I'm not a gamer, so the things that might excite others (and I'm sure they are exciting to gamers) are not a big deal to me. About the only thing I'd like to improve about my PS3 is the fan noise, and I've already found a work around for that problem.

I guess the thing that matters most to me on this is AMD being prominently featured in the next gen consoles. I swear every time I look their stock seems to always be in trouble, I hope this helps keep them afloat.

Well AMD hasn't been a very innovative company for the past.........10 or so years I would say. They really need to step the game up and release a killer CPU and so far it's been tiny incremental steps if not backsliding at some points.

I guess I would disagree. They might not have the fastest processors around but they are generally lower cost (sometimes substantially lower than an equivalent Intel) and get the job done for 99.9% of consumers and workstations. I really think their only problems have been poor business planning and even poorer advertising over the years.

Yes they are lower cost, but the gap has closed a lot. Some of Intel's slower products are faster then AMD's fastest products and close in price. They will get the job done yes, but as far as the market is concerned they are quite behind. Unfortunately due to the companies standings financially I don't know that we'll see anything amazing come from them, and I'm not an Intel fanboy by any means. I've owned 2 Intel PC's in my PC life and probably 10+ AMD PC's. I'd love to see AMD step it up though.

Well, we as consumers, really need them to be successful, so that there's competition. without that, we can see the cost of all computers go up. that would be what concerns me. I had pretty good luck with AMD early on, but I admit, when looking between two computers, I generally choose intel now. I have not found it to be significantly more expensive.

Yeah it used to be that Intel was 2-3 times more then AMD. To be honest there are a lot of competitors for Intel, they may not be directly competitive just yet, but I have a feeling before long all these mobile platforms will be direct competition for Intel.

It'll be interesting to see. I guarantee that they went this way with microsoft being so in bed with Intel... and Intel probably charging Sony pretty nice prices. AMD will hopefully step it up but I have yet to really ever see an AMD processor compete with anything Intel or IBM has done for performance in the gaming arena. Though I do think the Radeon GPU chipset will do a really nice job in that end. I've always felt their GPUs have been superior to Nvidia, but AMD just never supported them with the drivers they released that would get the best out of them... and like said above... AMD's business model is mainly to blame.

I have to say my two servers (ESXi and Win2k8r2) are both AMD 6x 3.6GHz processors and I have not one bad thing to say about them. However, I can see that any of my Intel CPUs are definitey better when crunching numbers (like processing music, video, etc).

So I wonder if the next Xbox will be some really amazing Intel machine...?
